Chapter Thirty-Nine: It Must Have Been Done by Lu Ziyi
This time, fortunately, there were no casualties in the accident, but it was enough to draw the attention of the veteran shareholders.
If not for the timely intervention of the nearby crane at the critical moment, there would surely have been deaths or injuries. That would not only have affected the progress of the construction, but the shares of the Lu Corporation might have plummeted as well. This construction site was already mired in controversy; if someone had died, all the investments in this project could very well have gone up in smoke.
Everyone was startled by the incident.
Not to mention, Xie Jinchuan was still present at the scene! If something had really happened to him, the Lu Corporation would have been left leaderless!
As for Lu Ziyi, frankly, no one even considered him. What kind of manager was he? No one dared let him run the company any longer!
For this reason, the Lu Corporation specially convened a shareholders’ meeting. Xie Jinchuan sat at the head of the table in silence while the shareholders erupted in heated discussion.
“This incident at the construction site in the west of the city must be thoroughly investigated!”
“Exactly! We’re lucky no one died, or our stocks would have crashed again!”
“There’s something strange about that site—could there really be something unclean there?”
“Oh, come on! In this day and age, you’re still superstitious? I bet it was the work of a rival! We must investigate thoroughly; there must be clues we can seize on.”
“Well said!”
Seeing that the discussion was drawing to a close, Xie Jinchuan glanced at his watch—it was nearly lunchtime. “This matter will be investigated to the fullest. You will all be given an explanation in due time.”
The shareholders voiced their agreement, and the meeting was adjourned.
Xie Jinchuan picked up his coat and left the meeting room. As soon as he entered his office, he was enveloped in a hug from behind by a petite woman. “Ah Jin, where have you been? You’ve been gone so long!”
Hearing Shen Qingli’s coquettish voice, his heart softened. He patted her arms wrapped around his waist. “I was at a meeting. Now it’s lunchtime. What would you like to eat?”
“Let’s have Japanese food!”
“All right! Let’s go!”
Because the entire company was taking the accident very seriously, the investigation proceeded rapidly. By the time Shen Qingli and Xie Jinchuan returned from lunch, a detailed report was already waiting on his desk.
Secretary Zhao stood before the desk, voice trembling with anger. “President Xie, the crane at the construction site was under President Lu’s direct supervision. After testing, it was found that the crane had been tampered with, which caused the accident. Coincidentally, President Lu’s bodyguard was at the site on the day of the incident.”
All evidence pointed to Lu Ziyi—who else could it be?
Secretary Zhao recalled Lu Ziyi’s previous reckless behavior and couldn’t help but suspect that he had orchestrated the accident to eliminate Xie Jinchuan and secure the position of president for himself.
“President Xie, President Lu’s actions must be severely punished. This has already crossed into the realm of criminal activity.”
Listening to Secretary Zhao’s indignant words, Xie Jinchuan sat in his chair and flipped through the documents, skimming them quickly.
Indeed, all the evidence pointed to Lu Ziyi, but he knew it wasn’t his doing.
Thinking of the traces of demonic energy lingering around the crane that day, his gaze grew colder. So be it—even if Lu Ziyi wasn’t responsible, his constant antics were annoying enough. This was a good opportunity to teach him a lesson.
He set the documents aside and said in a deep voice, “Notify the shareholders with this report.”
Secretary Zhao accepted the order and promptly spread the news to every shareholder.
Everyone gathered, indignation burning. The shareholders had already harbored deep resentment over Lu Ziyi’s previous mismanagement of the company, and now, with this new incident, their impression of him plummeted even further.
How could anyone be so foolish?
Was he truly not a saboteur sent by a rival to destroy the Lu Corporation?
The matter caused quite a stir. When the old Master Lu heard, he was so furious he nearly suffered a heart attack. Nevertheless, he had to pull himself together to clean up after his beloved grandson.
The shareholders first assembled and marched toward Lu Ziyi’s office, ready to confront him. At that moment, Lu Ziyi was still lost in the pleasures of romance.
“Ziyi, stop... stop it, this is the office!”
Shen Jingrong’s cheeks were flushed, her eyes sultry as she lay in Lu Ziyi’s arms. She might have been protesting, but her tone was more inviting than rejecting.
Seeing Shen Jingrong display such a contrast to her usual self—innocent yet seductive—Lu Ziyi’s heart raced, and he could hardly contain himself.
Just as he was about to pounce, the office door was suddenly kicked open.
The loud bang startled both of them. Shen Jingrong screamed, pushed Lu Ziyi away, straightened her skirt, and fled to a corner.
The shock instantly extinguished all of Lu Ziyi’s desire.
Every man knows that being startled at such a moment is a grave taboo—one might never recover from it.
Having his pleasure interrupted, and being frightened on top of that, left Lu Ziyi furious—he was practically ready to tear someone apart.
Looking up, he saw that the intruders were all company shareholders. Even if he couldn’t afford to offend them, he still bristled with anger. “What do you think you’re doing?”
The shareholders, seeing the disheveled state of Shen Jingrong and Lu Ziyi, immediately realized what they had been up to and felt even more contempt.
“What are we doing? Don’t you know what you’ve done?”
“You call yourself the heir to the Lu Corporation? If you can’t handle management, fine, but why must you drag us down with you? The Lu family must have committed grave sins in a past life to deserve a descendant like you!”
“You can’t manage the company and spend all day thinking about women—how utterly depraved!”
The shareholders showed no mercy in their words. Each was a company veteran—old enough to be Lu Ziyi’s uncle or even older.
Their words stripped Lu Ziyi of all dignity, yet he dared not talk back. Besides, he genuinely didn’t understand what was happening. All he could do was protest angrily, “Uncles, aren’t you going a bit too far? What exactly have I done?”
The shareholders, thinking he was feigning ignorance, tossed the compiled report onto his desk. “See for yourself what you’ve done!”
Confused, Lu Ziyi picked up the investigation report. The more he read, the paler he became. In the end, cold sweat broke out on his forehead. “It wasn’t me! It really wasn’t me!”
“It wasn’t you? Was it me, then? Didn’t your bodyguard visit the site? Weren’t you in charge of those cranes?”
Lu Ziyi was at a loss for words. He had only sent his bodyguard to keep an eye on Xie Jinchuan, not to tamper with the equipment!
With no surveillance footage to prove his innocence, there was nothing he could do.
He slumped into his chair, muttering, “It wasn’t me! It really wasn’t me!”
The shareholders, seeing his demeanor, assumed he was simply lying.
The commotion was so loud it was impossible not to attract attention. Lu Ziyi’s and Xie Jinchuan’s offices weren’t far apart.
Shen Qingli kept glancing outside, curiosity sparkling in her eyes. Xie Jinchuan, noticing her interest, smiled slightly. “Want to go take a look?”
