“Bang bang bang…”

The hurried knocking shattered the pleasant atmosphere. Su Manman opened the door and saw her mother, Wang Meili, standing outside.

“Mom, what are you doing here?” Su Manman asked, puzzled.

Wang Meili said nothing and walked straight to the sofa, plopping herself down.

“Ye Feng, come here!” Wang Meili commanded like a queen issuing orders.

Hearing his mother-in-law call, Ye Feng washed his hands and hurried over. “Mom, is there something you need?”

“Right now, immediately, go to the Civil Affairs Bureau and divorce Manman,” Wang Meili said coldly.

Ye Feng was bewildered, about to ask why, but before he could speak, Su Manman interjected, demanding loudly, “Mom, what are you doing?”

Wang Meili quickly stood up, walked to Su Manman, and took her hand, speaking in earnest, “Silly girl, I’m doing this for your own good. What future do you have with this useless man? The person I’m introducing you to just returned from studying abroad, and he’s already been hired as a vice president at a company. His father is a long-time partner of our family, and their background is excellent. He’s handsome, too.”

Seeing Su Manman remain silent, Wang Meili pressed on, “Look at this failure—what good has it brought you? You’ve been supporting him ever since you got married. And him? He can’t help you with anything, except bringing you shame.”

Ye Feng said nothing, waiting to see Su Manman’s response.

“Mom, please stop. I’m already married. I’m not merchandise for you to sell at your whim,” Su Manman said, her face dark with displeasure.

“Just go meet him once. What if you end up liking him?” Wang Meili persisted, unwilling to give up.

“Mom, stop it, okay? I’m not going, no matter what,” Su Manman said firmly.

“Su Manman, I’m telling you, if you don’t go today, I’ll stay here and never leave!” Her mother-in-law, seeing Su Manman’s determination, switched from persuasion to threat.

She looked around, picked up the fruit knife from the coffee table, and pressed it to her wrist, threatening her own life. “If you still consider me your mother, promise me you’ll go meet him today. Or do you really want to see me die in front of you?”

Seeing her mother pick up the knife, Su Manman’s heart softened, and she relented, “I promise, I’ll go meet him, all right?” She sank onto the sofa, head bowed and silent.

The moment Su Manman agreed, Wang Meili quickly put down the fruit knife, as if afraid of hurting herself. She walked over, patted Su Manman’s shoulder, and said, “That’s my good daughter. Tomorrow, you must dress nicely. I’ll send the time and address later.”

Passing Ye Feng, she deliberately shoved him aside and said with disgust, “Get out of the way, useless thing. Good dogs don’t block the road—understand?”

“Oh, and take your things and get out. Don’t let me see you here again,” Wang Meili stopped, snarled, and then left, humming a tune as she swayed out.

Ye Feng paid no mind to his mother-in-law’s words. He walked over, half-kneeled in front of Su Manman, and comforted her softly, “Manman, it’s all right. I’ll always be by your side.”

Su Manman looked up, eyes red, and said, “I didn’t want to agree, but she’s my mother. How could I bear to see her…”

“It’s all right, I understand.” Seeing Su Manman’s tearful eyes, Ye Feng felt his heart squeezed by invisible hands. He knew how strong-willed she was.

“Will you come with me tomorrow?” Su Manman choked out.

“I won’t go with you. Remember, I have to work tomorrow,” Ye Feng smiled.

He trusted Su Manman completely, knowing she wasn’t the fickle type.

Hearing this, Su Manman felt Ye Feng wasn’t a man at all—he could tolerate his wife going on a date with another man and even said he needed to work tomorrow. Whatever faint affection she felt vanished instantly.

Su Manman stood up, cursed him as a coward, and left.

Ye Feng was left standing there, baffled.

The next day.

Ye Feng got up early, prepared breakfast for Su Manman, and then went out.

He hailed a taxi and sped to the company. At the entrance, he happened to see Meng Qing approaching. Ye Feng greeted her, “Good morning.”

“You’re early. Come on, I’ll show you around,” Meng Qing said.

They walked into the company together. Meng Qing took him to the sales department.

“Everyone, pause your work. I want you to meet our new colleague,” Meng Qing turned to Ye Feng. “Introduce yourself.”

Ye Feng nodded, confident and poised. “Hello, everyone. I’m Ye Feng. I’ll be working with you from now on. Please take care of me.”

A murmur spread through the room.

“Ye Feng? Why does that name sound so familiar?”

“Oh, I remember! Isn’t he the one who married into the Su family three years ago?”

“That’s right, it’s him. I’ve seen his photo. Heard he’s never been accepted by the Sus, and hasn’t earned a cent since he got married.”

Ye Feng paid no attention to the chatter. He was used to such gossip, unbothered.

Meng Qing heard the murmurs and, seeing Ye Feng’s face unchanged, felt reassured. She clapped her hands loudly and said, “All right, stop discussing. Ye Feng is now part of SIRUI. I hope you get along. Back to work. Huang Yu, you’re the department head—assign Ye Feng a task.”

With that, Meng Qing left.

Huang Yu approached Ye Feng with contempt. “New guy, why aren’t you staying home? Now that you’re here, no one’s going to support you for free. Go get this contract signed with Hengda Group. If you don’t close the deal, don’t bother coming in tomorrow.”

Huang Yu returned to his seat, a smug smile on his lips, thinking to himself,

“This contract has been tried before, but no one succeeded. How could Hengda Group even consider a small company like ours? Even Director Meng doesn’t expect anything from this deal. I’d like to see you try! Tomorrow, you’ll be out the door.”

Ye Feng glanced at the contract. The other party turned out to be his own company. He smiled to himself, thinking, “Sealing this deal is just a matter of one word from me.”

He turned to Huang Yu and said, “It’s no trouble at all. One phone call and it’s done. Do you believe me?”

Huang Yu hadn’t answered, but the other employees erupted.

“Damn, what a show-off! Should I beat him up?”

“Manager Huang is the star of our sales department. If he couldn’t handle it, what makes this guy think he can? Talking big, isn’t he?”

“Exactly. I bet living off his wife has made him delusional.”

Hearing Huang Yu’s voice, everyone quieted. “If you pull it off, I’ll hand over my manager position to you!”

Ye Feng smiled, said nothing, turned and went to the restroom, pulled out his phone, and dialed Secretary Tao.

“Luckily I saved Secretary Tao’s number, or I’d have been embarrassed today.”

Soon, a voice came from the other end.

“Hello, Mr. Ye, is there something you need?”

“Oh, I heard SIRUI wants to cooperate with Hengda?”

“Yes, SIRUI has tried many times, but the former president refused them all,” Secretary Tao replied seriously.

“Call them now and inform them that cooperation is approved.”

“Yes!” Secretary Tao didn’t ask for details—he was just a secretary, after all.

Ye Feng hung up.

Not long after, Huang Yu’s phone rang.

He pulled it out and saw Secretary Tao of Hengda Group calling! He hurriedly answered.

“Hello? Secretary Tao.”

“What? Agreed to cooperate?”

Huang Yu’s words stunned everyone.
