Chapter 25: Do You Dare Compete With Me?
“Brother, thank you for helping me see this woman for who she really is.” A trace of bitterness flickered across Si Xu’s face.
Ye Feng said nothing, only gave his shoulder a reassuring pat.
“There’s something I almost forgot,” Si Xu continued, his expression darkening, “Didn’t you always say you were just a salesman at the company? How did you suddenly become the chairman of Evergrand Group? You still wouldn’t tell me the truth, even to my face.”
Ye Feng coughed. “Well… I was just worried it might affect our brotherhood. If I told you I was Evergrand’s chairman, wouldn’t you treat me differently because of my status?”
Si Xu, caught out, looked embarrassed and quickly changed the topic. “Since you’re the chairman now, you’ll have to look after your brother’s company more, you know.” He spoke as if it was only natural.
“Of course! Leave it to me!” Ye Feng replied with a hearty wave of his hand.
“All right, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head back. There’s a mountain of work waiting for me at the office. Let’s grab a drink sometime.”
“Anytime, I’ll be waiting.” Ye Feng could only laugh at Si Xu’s sudden change in attitude.
After this incident, their friendship became even more unbreakable.
Once Si Xu left, Ye Feng remained seated, reflecting on all that had happened recently between himself and Su Manman. A smile gradually curved at his lips.
He realized that in the three years of their marriage, he’d never really given her a proper gift. Guilt stirred in his heart; he wanted to make it up to her with something grand.
Ye Feng took out his phone, found F’s number, and dialed.
On the other end, F’s voice came through, “My king, how may I serve you?”
“I want to prepare a surprise for Manman. Help me with the arrangements.” A gentle smile played on Ye Feng’s lips.
“My king, what kind of surprise would you like to give your wife?”
“I want to give her a magnificent proposal ceremony.”
“Understood, my king.”
Ye Feng hung up and glanced at the time. Only half an hour remained before she finished work. He quickly stood up and left to pick up Su Manman.
…
Ye Feng drove to the building where Su Manman worked. He saw employees filing out, but after waiting a long while, there was still no sign of her. Worry crept in. He took out his phone, found her number, and called. After a few seconds, her voice came through.
“Ye Feng, what’s up? Did you need something?” She’d already forgotten that she’d asked him to pick her up after work.
“Manman, I’m waiting downstairs at your company to pick you up. Why haven’t you come out yet?” Hearing her voice soothed his nerves.
“I’ve been so busy I forgot. I’m not at the office now—I came with Yiyi to pick out a diamond ring.” She sounded apologetic.
“Where are you? I’ll come to you.”
“I’m at Tongling Jewelry. Come over.” She gave him the address.
“All right, wait there for me. I’ll be there soon.” Ye Feng hung up.
“Tongling Jewelry? Isn’t that a subsidiary of Evergrand Group? Since Manman’s already there, maybe I’ll find something she likes and give it to her.” He started the car and sped off.
About fifteen minutes later, Ye Feng arrived at Tongling Jewelry. As soon as he stepped in, he spotted Su Manman. In front of her, Su Yiyi and her boyfriend, Yue Feng, were picking out diamond jewelry at the display counter.
Ye Feng called out, “Manman.”
She turned and greeted him with a gentle smile. “You got here fast.”
He simply smiled and walked over to her.
“Well, well, look who it is. Isn’t this the Su family’s infamous good-for-nothing son-in-law? What are you doing here—shopping for diamonds?” Su Yiyi sneered without restraint.
Beside her, Yue Feng glared at Ye Feng. “Exactly, can you even afford a diamond?”
If not for Su Manman, Yue Feng would’ve broken up with Su Yiyi by now. Instead, he had to buy her gifts in hopes of winning her back. He didn’t dare cross Su Manman, but venting his anger on this useless son-in-law was easy enough.
Ye Feng chuckled inwardly. “Who says I can’t afford it?”
Tongling Jewelry belonged to Evergrand Group—his own business. Did he need to pay for anything here? All it took was a word.
“If you’ve got the guts, let’s compete. Let’s see who can buy more diamonds in this store,” Yue Feng challenged, glaring at Ye Feng. As deputy director of a prestigious hospital, how could he possibly lose to a worthless son-in-law? Fearing Ye Feng might refuse, he pressed on, “If you’re a real man, you’ll accept!”
“All right. I accept.” Ye Feng was calm and unhurried.
Su Manman tugged at his sleeve, whispering, “Ye Feng, don’t be reckless. Do you even know your own limits?”
“Cousin, since this loser already agreed, why are you worried about him? Or do you want to show up at the company gala without a decent piece of jewelry?” Su Yiyi mocked, her eyes fixed on Ye Feng.
Seeing Ye Feng agree, Su Manman said nothing more. She thought, “If Ye Feng can’t pay, I’ll buy it myself. As a company chairwoman, can’t I afford a diamond?”
Yue Feng pulled Su Yiyi to the display, “Wrap up this diamond ring, the pair of diamond earrings, and that diamond necklace too.”
The sales clerk, thrilled to meet such a generous customer, couldn’t have been more attentive. With a client like this, a hefty commission was surely in store.
Su Yiyi was delighted to see Yue Feng buying her so much jewelry. She easily forgave him for the embarrassment he’d caused her earlier.
She beamed, “Darling, you’re so good to me. Not like some people who, after all these years of marriage, still can’t afford a decent piece of jewelry.” Her gaze flickered to Ye Feng.
“As long as you’re happy,” Yue Feng smiled, thinking to himself that this useless son-in-law wanted to show off—how laughable.
“What’s wrong, loser—can’t even buy your own wife a single diamond?” Yue Feng sneered at Ye Feng.
Ye Feng ignored them, took Su Manman by the hand, and approached the counter. He pointed to a bracelet. “Show me that one.”
The sales clerk noticed at once—it was the Crystal Chain, the store’s prized possession, valued at one and a half million. Many had asked about it, but few could afford the price. She was elated.
She placed the bracelet on the counter.
“A useless son-in-law dares to look at something that expensive?” Su Yiyi’s tone was sharp.
“Exactly. You couldn’t afford it even if you sold yourself,” Yue Feng mocked openly.
Ye Feng ignored them, took the bracelet, and fastened it around Su Manman’s wrist. Satisfied, he nodded. “Wrap it up.”
Su Manman sneaked a glance at the price tag and gasped—it was one and a half million!
One and a half million was no small sum. Her company’s quarterly revenue barely matched that amount. How could Ye Feng possibly afford a bracelet worth one and a half million?
