Chapter 22: The Patriarch of the Su Family Gravely Ill
Regarding Shen Meng’s gaze, Ye Feng merely smiled indifferently.
Si Xu watched his angry girlfriend storm off, feeling a little awkward. “Brother, sorry you had to witness that.”
Ye Feng said nothing, simply patting Si Xu on the shoulder.
“Come on, let’s go for a drink.” Si Xu waved his hand broadly, and together they left the Holiday Hotel.
As Shen Meng slammed the door behind her and left, her face twisted with rage. “Ye Feng, just you wait! Si Xu, one day I’ll see you ruined and disgraced!”
...
Once again, the two arrived at Nightfall Bar.
“Brother, you’re always out drinking—won’t your wife be angry?” Si Xu slurred slightly.
“No, she’s a gentle and kind woman. Marrying her is the best thing I’ve ever done.” In Ye Feng’s mind appeared the image of Su Manman sleeping in his arms the previous night, and a smile began to curve his lips.
“Haha, look at you, all happiness on your face.” Si Xu said, a little envious.
They raised their glasses and drank in one gulp. Several rounds passed.
Ye Feng’s phone rang. He glanced down—it was Su Manman calling. His heart leapt; he quickly pressed to answer.
“Manman, is there something you need?”
“Ye Feng, where are you? The old man at home has fallen ill. Hurry to my office, let’s go to the hospital together.” Su Manman’s voice was urgent.
“Alright, don’t worry, I’ll be there soon.” After comforting Su Manman, Ye Feng hung up.
He looked apologetically at Si Xu. “Sorry, brother, something’s happened at home. We’ll meet again another time.”
“No problem, go on. If you need anything, just call me.”
“Thanks.” Ye Feng hurried outside, flagged down a taxi, and headed straight for Su Manman’s company.
Su Manman paced anxiously outside the office building, worrying inwardly. “Ye Feng, why aren’t you here yet?”
“Manman, what’s going on?” Ye Feng spotted her at once, tossed money onto the taxi seat, and ran over.
“Ye Feng, you drive. We’ll talk on the way.” Su Manman’s face lit up on seeing him.
Ye Feng took the car keys and drove toward the hospital.
...
They arrived at Prosperity Hospital, where all the family had already gathered. A middle-aged woman in a cheongsam, her makeup exquisite and not a wrinkle in sight—evidence of meticulous self-care—spoke up.
“Manman, as your second aunt, let me say this: the old man is hospitalized, everyone is here, and you’re the only one missing. Do you even care about him?”
---
“You’re right, Manman. You could’ve come alone—why bring this useless man and make things worse for all of us?”
“If you ask me, the old man’s illness is all your fault. You refused the family’s arrangements and insisted on marrying this good-for-nothing. How could he not be angry?”
Everyone pointed fingers, rebuking the tardy Su Manman and Ye Feng.
Su Manman’s status in the family was never high. Had she obeyed their wishes, she wouldn’t be facing such ridicule. But unwilling to be the family’s pawn, she’d married Ye Feng out of spite, making him a live-in son-in-law.
Su Manman didn’t respond, her face darkening; Ye Feng grasped her hand, offering comfort.
“Second Aunt, let’s leave it be. Maybe Manman was late because of traffic.” Su Manman’s mother, Wang Meili, spoke up for her daughter. No matter how angry she was, blood was thicker than water.
After Wang Meili’s words, the others graciously fell silent.
“Who is Su Daqiang’s family?” A doctor in a white coat emerged from the operating room and approached.
“I am, I’m his wife.” An elderly lady, leaning on a cane, white-haired, stepped forward.
“Mr. Su’s condition is grave. Here’s the notice of critical illness; please sign.”
The old lady’s hand trembled as she wrote her name, her face pleading. “Doctor, I entrust my husband to you.”
“Rest assured, we’ll do our best,” the doctor replied, turning away.
“Su Manman, you’d better pray nothing happens to him, or you’ll be kicked out of the Su family!”
“That’s right, don’t expect a cent from the inheritance!”
“If anything happens to the old man, you and that useless man are both to blame!”
The accusations rang in Su Manman’s ears. Ye Feng saw the tears in her eyes, his brows knitting, his face darkening.
No matter how others insulted or beat him, Ye Feng could take it. But when it concerned Su Manman, he would never endure it.
Ye Feng was about to speak up, but Su Manman tugged at his sleeve, shaking her head, signaling him not to make trouble.
“Sweetheart, isn’t your boyfriend a doctor here? Call him and see if there’s anything he can do,” a graceful woman suggested.
“Alright, I’ll call him over.” Liu Yiyi’s face was full of pride.
Under everyone’s gaze, Liu Yiyi took out her phone and dialed Yue Feng. The call was quickly answered; a deep, magnetic voice came through.
“Yiyi, did you call because you miss me?”
Liu Yiyi blushed. “Stop it. My grandfather’s seriously ill. Come over—I’m outside the surgical ward on the second floor.”
“Okay, wait for me, I’ll be right there.” Yue Feng hung up and hurried to the operating room.
“He’ll be here soon,” Liu Yiyi said to the family after hanging up.
---
At that moment, hurried footsteps drew everyone’s attention.
A handsome man in a white coat approached.
“Yiyi, what’s happening?”
“Yue Feng, please find out if there’s any hope for my grandfather,” Liu Yiyi pleaded urgently.
“Don’t worry, I’ll check right away.” Yue Feng comforted her and turned to leave.
Twenty minutes later, Yue Feng returned. The family crowded around, asking, “What did you find out?”
“The old man’s illness is extremely severe. Unless we bring in a professor-level expert, there might be hope. Otherwise...” Yue Feng didn’t finish, fearing the news would be too much.
Standing at the back, Ye Feng overheard. He pulled Su Manman aside.
“Manman, do you want to see him cured?”
Su Manman hesitated. The person lying in that bed was her grandfather, her kin, no matter how he treated her. She answered firmly, “Yes. Do you have a way?”
“I do. But you must promise me one thing.” Ye Feng’s expression was mysterious.
“Alright, I promise. What’s your plan?” Su Manman asked, curiosity on her face.
“I’ll call a doctor over. When they arrive, just say you invited them. Don’t mention me, understand?” Ye Feng whispered.
Wang Meili heard voices and saw Ye Feng and Su Manman speaking aside. She stormed over and yanked Su Manman away.
“Keep your distance from that useless man. Do you want everyone to target you?” With that, she dragged Su Manman off.
Meanwhile, Yue Feng volunteered, “I know a very skilled doctor. I’ll try to contact them.”
“Yue Feng, thank you so much. You truly are the Su family’s ideal son-in-law,” Liu Yiyi’s mother said proudly.
Seeing Su Manman pulled away by her mother-in-law, Ye Feng dialed D’s number. A concerned voice quickly answered.
“Sir, are you injured? Where are you? I’ll come right away.”
“D, it’s not me. It’s my wife’s family. Please come to Prosperity Hospital.”
“Understood, sir.”
About an hour later, D arrived at Prosperity Hospital.
D was wearing an off-shoulder dress, her fair face sharp and coldly elegant, a high nose, exquisitely shaped lips—all features radiating nobility and grace.
Yue Feng instantly recognized her: the legendary Yun Xi, hailed as the modern miracle-worker of medicine!
