Chapter Fifteen: Foundations and Towers
The grand finale of the sports day was the "Team Tower Building Challenge." This event was designed to showcase the tacit understanding between parents and children, as well as the collaborative spirit within families. The rules were simple: within a set time limit, using a limited number of blocks, build the tallest tower possible.
This was precisely where Li Yue's expertise shone. Her husband was an architectural designer, and their son, Stone, had always played with the most expensive LEGO sets and structural toys since childhood. To them, the gold medal was already in their grasp.
"Honey, you design the structure. Stone, you handle the passing. I'll do the building! We'll divide the tasks clearly and finish this quickly!" Li Yue swiftly devised a battle plan, and her family appeared both professional and efficient.
As soon as the whistle signaled the start of the competition, Li Yue's family displayed astonishing speed. Her designer husband rapidly conceived the model in his mind, directing his wife as she built. The blocks flew in Li Yue's hands, and the tower soared upwards at a pace visible to the naked eye, soon surpassing all the other families and drawing gasps of amazement.
Stone, excited, handed over blocks with a proud look on his face.
Meanwhile, Yi Yi and I maintained a steady, unhurried pace. I wasn't chasing speed; instead, I lined up all the blocks before us and guided Yi Yi to get acquainted with them.
"Look, Yi Yi," I said, picking up the largest, thickest block, "this wide and heavy one is like the roots of a tree. Only when the roots are firmly planted can the tree grow tall and withstand the wind."
I then picked up a long, slender block: "This one is like the beam of a house. It needs to be placed in key spots to support the weight above."
Using the simplest metaphors, I explained each piece to my daughter. Yi Yi listened, utterly absorbed. She no longer saw this as a competition, but as a wondrous journey of creation.
We began building. I was responsible for constructing the base, using nearly half the blocks to create an incredibly solid and stable foundation. Yi Yi, under my guidance, carefully placed the smaller blocks where I indicated.
Our tower was the shortest of all the families at first. From beside her towering "skyscraper," Li Yue cast a glance our way, her smile kindly but with a hint of "you're too slow."
Minute by minute, time passed.
Once the towers of each family reached a certain height, problems began to emerge. Due to unstable bases and the pursuit of height, many towers grew precarious. A breeze swept through, and several "tall towers" collapsed with a crash, eliciting sighs and tears from the children.
Li Yue's tower was the tallest, but it too began to tilt. Her husband anxiously directed, "Be gentle! Add a counterweight on the left!"
Li Yue held her breath, carefully placing the final block atop the tower. Yet, the moment the block touched the tip, the seemingly majestic tower, top-heavy and unstable, lost its balance.
Crash—
Blocks scattered across the floor like a waterfall.
"Wow—" Stone stared at the mess, his accumulated pride instantly shattered. He opened his mouth and burst into tears. Li Yue stood frozen, her face full of regret and defeat.
Only one tower remained standing.
It was the creation by Yi Yi and me.
It wasn't the tallest—indeed, it was shorter than Li Yue's tower before it fell—but its structure was balanced, its base solid. Even in the breeze, it stood unshaken, radiating a simple, resilient beauty.
Hand in hand with Yi Yi, I placed the last block steadily atop the tower.
It was finished.
All eyes focused on our not-so-"grand" tower. The teachers came over, examined its stability carefully, and then announced us as the winners of the event. The rules judged not only height, but also successful construction.
Yi Yi jumped up in delight, but instead of cheering, she took my hand and walked over to the still-crying Stone.
I crouched down, looking at Li Yue and her husband, whose faces bore defeat. Calmly, I spoke: "More haste, less speed."
Pointing to our stable tower, I said to them—and to Stone—"Only with a strong foundation can you build high and go far. Life is much like building a tower."
Li Yue gazed at me, then at the serene Yi Yi by my side. My words, like a key, instantly unlocked the tightly closed door of anxiety in her heart. She had always urged Stone to run faster, never considering whether his foundation was truly solid.
She looked into my tranquil eyes, seeing no boastfulness of a victor, only the peace and clarity of one who has weathered many storms. She helped Stone to his feet, and the first words she spoke were no longer, "It's okay, we'll win next time," but a gentle, "I'm sorry, Mommy was too anxious."
