Chapter 110: The Tech Conference
“All right.”
Whispering Ear relented and continued searching for humans.
Life has dealt me painful blows, and I respond with song...
.......
Meanwhile, a shadow hung over Tech Corporation. Ye Jian, the person in charge, sat in his office, wearing a weary expression.
Tang Senna had just gotten off the plane and was immediately killed by zombies. The newly deployed second-generation cyborg had also perished last night.
The critical issue was that the company had called a high-level meeting for the Long Kingdom region to report on their progress.
How was he supposed to present his work? Wouldn’t the other branch leaders laugh him to death?
Glancing at the time, the meeting was about to begin. Ye Jian steeled himself and put on the VR headset beside him.
Tech Corporation’s meetings were held online, through the “Metaverse.”
As the VR device activated, his vision went dark. When it returned, he found himself inside a virtual conference hall.
Around the conference table, glowing silhouettes flickered like figures being printed out, gradually solidifying into human shapes.
Several branch leaders appeared, both men and women.
At the head of the table sat a middle-aged man dressed in a sharp suit — Wang Rong, the regional director for Tech Corporation in the Long Kingdom.
“Is everyone here?”
Wang Rong’s gaze swept the room. “Our time is precious, so let’s get straight to the point. Please report on your work, branch leaders. Liu Baiyue, you start.”
“Certainly. Our branch in Linshan City is progressing smoothly. All the high-level corpse kings in the city have been eliminated, and we have full control over the situation.”
A woman spoke confidently. Her skin was as pure as snow, her features exquisite, her beauty striking—she exuded the aura of a formidable female CEO.
The other leaders reacted with admiration.
“As expected of Liu Baiyue, she has taken control so quickly.”
“How did she manage it?”
“Her strength is incredible!”
“.......”
Ye Jian looked around silently, instinctively lowering his head a little.
Wang Rong nodded approvingly.
“Good, well done. Next.”
“Uh, Director Wang, our branch in Handong City...”
Another leader began reporting.
The overall situation was mixed—there were victories against zombies and defeats as well. The circumstances were generally similar.
Only Ye Jian lowered his head even further.
As others reported, it was almost his turn. The feeling was like a teacher grading papers, and he hadn’t finished his own yet.
Finally, after a moment, Wang Rong’s gaze landed on him.
“Ye Jian, how is the situation in Jiangbei City?”
“Ahem! We... it’s the same as before. Various plans are underway.”
Ye Jian began to evade the question.
“Oh...”
Wang Rong nodded and asked,
“Is the corpse king cultivation plan progressing well?”
“Ahem! That... the corpse king in Jiangbei City is indeed quite powerful, but... it’s not one we cultivated.”
“Huh???”
Wang Rong’s eyes widened, then after a moment, he understood what Ye Jian meant.
Liu Baiyue smirked coldly beside him and said,
“Director Ye, I think you’re being modest. I suspect you had a hand in the corpse king’s strength as well.”
“That... that was an accident.”
Ye Jian forced out a reply, inwardly resentful of this wretched woman who was always opposing him.
He and Liu Baiyue had long been rivals—professional enemies in the workplace.
Wang Rong narrowed his eyes and asked,
“Ye Jian, what exactly happened?”
“Director Wang, that corpse king is too strong—almost an unsolvable problem. I really had no way to handle it!”
Ye Jian put on a pitiful face and began to complain.
“What about the Z virus and Q virus headquarters sent you?” Wang Rong asked. He had personally requested those two viruses from headquarters.
Ye Jian’s headache deepened at the question.
He hadn’t even seen what those viruses looked like himself...
“They were intercepted by zombies during transport.”
“What?”
Wang Rong’s eyes widened in disbelief, thinking it sounded like a fairy tale.
“Wasn’t Q virus transported by Tang Senna?”
“He was dead the moment he got off the plane.”
Ye Jian continued.
“........” Wang Rong was speechless.
The entire virtual conference room fell silent for three seconds.
Ye Jian felt helpless. What else could he do?
One branch leader suspiciously asked,
“Old Ye, if you lost both viruses, could it be that you colluded with the corpse king—betrayed the company?”
“Impossible! I am utterly loyal to the company.”
Ye Jian quickly declared.
Liu Baiyue paused thoughtfully.
“I believe Ye Jian. He probably isn’t lying.”
“Huh?”
Everyone looked at her, curious. They all knew these two usually disliked each other. Why was she speaking up for Ye Jian?
But soon, Liu Baiyue added,
“He simply lacks the ability.”
“.......” Ye Jian frowned. As expected, no good words came from her mouth—just bitter truth.
“It’s really not my fault. That corpse king is just too strong. It possesses a strange ability, with strength at least at A-rank or above. We simply can’t contend with it!”
“Hmph. If that’s the case... what if I send four A-rank Awakened, plus A+ grade triple-ability cyborgs? How would that corpse king respond?”
Liu Baiyue sneered challengingly.
Having hunted many corpse kings, her Awakened subordinates were powerful, and she controlled most of the city’s resources. Her troops were well-fed and well-equipped.
Ye Jian sneered.
“I think it’s best not to send anyone. It’s better not to provoke that corpse king. Let the company develop further, and we’ll find the right opportunity to take it down.”
“Hey? Ye Jian, that’s your mistake. We all serve the company—should cooperate and unite. Now is not the time to cling to pride.”
Wang Rong advised. He assumed Ye Jian refused Liu Baiyue’s help out of pride.
Liu Baiyue’s lips curled slightly.
“Director Wang, rest assured. If Ye Jian can’t handle it, I will. If he can’t kill the corpse king, then I will.”
“Very well, that’s decided then. If there’s nothing else, the meeting is adjourned!”
......
At the edge of Lin Dong’s territory, the river flowed with a rushing sound.
Whispering Ear was still searching for humans. He pressed his ear to the ground, walking along the riverbank. Perhaps the sound of flowing water interfered, making it difficult to pinpoint the source.
Tank and the other three kings wandered behind him.
Xiao Ba scanned the area with his eyes.
“Can’t find anyone? Looks like he’s worthless. Might as well just kill him.”
“How can he be worthless? Look how clean he’s kept the place?”
Tank said with a goofy smile.
“........” Whispering Ear felt a wave of exasperation. He silently complained: family, who understands? I’m diligently searching for humans, yet they treat me like a floor mop...
Just then, his ears twitched slightly, faintly catching the sound of humans talking.
Whispering Ear quickly raised his head, gazing across the roaring river.
“There are humans on the opposite bank!”
