Chapter 107: Yan Fei Makes His Move
The man who appeared was none other than Yan Fei, the "Flying General" from the paper-effigy shop. The moment he entered, he let out a thunderous shout of "Blade!"
Wang Feiyang, who had been on the verge of charging forward, immediately understood and tossed the *Jiemie* blade in his hand toward Yan Fei.
Yan Fei caught the weapon and, without a word, rushed toward me. With a movement as swift as lightning, he delivered a heavy strike directly onto the chest of the Silver-Armored Corpse.
A single blow carved a massive gash into the creature's chest, sending its entire body flying back three or four meters. Before it could even hit the ground, Yan Fei pursued it with incredible speed, landing another strike on its lower abdomen.
We were all stunned by Yan Fei’s astonishing prowess. This dignified Silver-Armored Corpse, a formidable foe, was being hacked to pieces by Yan Fei with no room to fight back.
Just as the Silver-Armored Corpse hit the ground and Yan Fei prepared to continue his assault, Sheng Jun, standing on the rooftop, sensed that the situation had turned. He blew a sharp whistle, and the Five-Element Corpses, which had been attacking others, simultaneously abandoned their targets and swarmed toward Yan Fei.
Facing this onslaught of Five-Element Corpses, Yan Fei didn't even blink. He dispatched them one by one; even the Copper-Armored Corpses were treated like mere cabbage under his blade.
Seeing this, Sheng Jun on the roof grew absolutely furious. I clearly saw him tilt his head back and roar, his eyes turning a vivid green as two sharp fangs became visible in his mouth.
"A zombie!"
The realization flashed through my mind instantly. That Sheng Jun was actually a legendary zombie.
Just as an enraged Sheng Jun prepared to leap down, Li Fu’an, standing nearby, tried to stop him. "Don't be reckless! That man is the greatest paper-effigy maker in Bashu—the Flying General Yan Fei. We are no match for him."
Li Fu’an was well-versed in the world of paper-effigies and knew the Flying General's reputation. Possessing a keen sense of self-preservation, he tried to drag Sheng Jun away. But Sheng Jun ignored him, leaving only a blur as he vaulted from the roof.
He did not attack Yan Fei, however; instead, he snatched up the severely wounded Silver-Armored Corpse and leaped back onto the roof in the blink of an eye.
Sheng Jun’s speed was blinding. The entire maneuver happened in a heartbeat. Yan Fei gave chase immediately, but just as he kicked off the wall, Li Fu’an’s voice boomed from above: "Fold paper into an army!"
As the words left his lips, two palm-sized paper dolls shot from Li Fu’an’s hands. With a soft pop in mid-air, they transformed into two figures dressed in Beijing Opera costumes—Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong.
One wielded a pair of golden maces, the other a great blade. Standing seven feet tall, these paper constructs possessed terrifying combat power.
Yuchi Gong swung his blade, carving a deep fissure into the ground. Yan Fei paused, tossed the *Jiemie* back to Wang Feiyang, then caught the golden mace in one hand and clamped onto the great blade with the other. He roared, "Break!"
The paper dolls disintegrated into countless scraps of paper with a soft tearing sound. Yan Fei wasted no time, leaping off the wall to the roof, but by then, Sheng Jun and Li Fu’an were nowhere to be found.
Yan Fei did not pursue them; they had already vanished into the vast night.
He leaped down from the roof, his cold eyes sweeping across the surroundings. He retrieved the blade from Wang Feiyang once more and swiftly executed the remaining Five-Element Corpses.
The scent of blood filled the mortuary, and the courtyard was littered with severed limbs, a sight that made one’s skin crawl.
The battle had been brutal. Nearly half of the twenty armed police officers brought by Peng Li were dead; two of the four Maoshan Taoist priests brought by Qin Yu had also fallen. Wang Feiyang and I were both injured. Only Bai Ruoshuang remained unscathed, her white down jacket perfectly clean.
Facing this carnage, she continued to eat her popcorn as if completely immune to the horror.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed from inside the mortuary. Peng Li was the first to raise his weapon and fire into the room.
Following the shot, the footsteps inside became chaotic; it sounded as if there were several people, not just one.
"Charge in!"
Though his expression was grim, Peng Li kept his composure. He rushed into the main hall first, followed by the remaining dozen officers.
Soon, shouts of "Don't move! Hands up!" rang out from inside.
Looking in, I saw seven or eight men in black standing there—Sheng Jun’s subordinates. They had been hiding inside during the battle, expecting the Five-Element Corpses to wipe us out, so they hadn't fled. But with Yan Fei’s sudden intervention and Sheng Jun’s retreat, they were trapped.
Of the eight men, four raised their hands and crouched down. The others hesitated. Among them, a one-eyed man ignored Peng Li’s group and turned to flee through the back door.
The officers, already infuriated by the loss of their comrades, opened fire. The one-eyed man was riddled with bullets. Seeing this, the remaining men froze. Two surrendered, but one was too slow and was shot down by an officer behind Peng Li.
We remained silent, our spirits heavy. Our losses far exceeded our expectations. Although we had cleared out Sheng Jun’s hideout, the primary targets—Sheng Jun and Li Fu’an—had escaped, taking the Silver-Armored Corpse with them.
Overall, the mission was a failure.
"Let's go."
After finishing off the Five-Element Corpses, Yan Fei did not linger. He instructed Wang Feiyang to leave. Wang Feiyang nodded to me and departed with Yan Fei.
Peng Li called the police station to request a cleanup crew. He looked devastated, sitting on the stone steps, smoking in silence while his officers vented their anger on the captured men.
I walked over, took a cigarette from him, and asked, "Brother Peng, are you alright?"
Peng Li offered a bitter smile and shook his head. "In this line of work, you always know this day might come. My brothers... they were good men." He took a deep breath, pulled out a bottle of Jiangxiaobai liquor, took a swig, and stared up at the moon, his eyes rimmed with red.
"Was it this same Sheng Jun you encountered on the mission two years ago?" From their earlier exchange, I was certain he was the one who had caused Peng Li such trauma.
Peng Li tightened his grip on the bottle and took another long drink.
"What was that mission two years ago? What happened?"
Peng Li looked at me but didn't answer. Seeing his reluctance, I pressed no further. I gripped his shoulder firmly. "Brother Peng, one day, you will avenge your brothers."
"Is he... a zombie?" Peng Li asked, his voice suddenly grave.
"Yes," I nodded without hesitation. "And a high-level one—a green-eyed one."
