Chapter Thirty-One: Sudden Collapse
When it came to the children, Zhao's father spoke with great seriousness. Zhao Haitan, having nowhere else to turn, returned home to the Zhao family. They had assisted him thus far, and the child was waiting for the final treatment; they could not allow Yang Qingqing, that selfish woman, to have any influence. Usually, he did not say much, but at critical moments like this, mistakes were unacceptable.
Zhao Fan agreed with his father: "Eldest brother, the Yang family has already stated that they do not want the child from the beginning, so we must maintain this situation now." Zhao's mother did not speak, but her expression clearly indicated her agreement with both Zhao's father and Zhao Fan. Caught in the middle, Zhao Haitan looked around, suddenly unsure of what to say.
"Eldest brother," Zhao Fan placed a hand on his shoulder, his tone heavy, "you must think of the child. I don’t know how Yang Qingqing found her way here, but since she has come, things will not end well." Previously, Yang Qingqing had broken off contact with Zhao Haitan and the Zhao family for years due to their financial situation, and now she was abandoning the child because of leukemia, showcasing her true nature.
"Eldest brother, can you guess why Yang Qingqing is here this time?"
Zhao Haitan's lips trembled, unable to speak for a long time. After being married to Yang Qingqing for several years, how could he not guess her motives for coming now? He had no money, but the child could be treated; Yang Qingqing was after money.
"Xiao Fan, I understand now."
"Eldest brother, don’t be confused." Applying a bit of pressure with his hand, Zhao Fan took a step back. "I’ll find someone to see if we can get Yun'er to receive a blood transfusion early. Eldest brother, you should rest for now and wait for the hospital to notify you about the bone marrow match."
"Okay."
After leaving the hospital, Zhao Fan was about to hail a taxi when a Bentley suddenly pulled up beside him. Just as he was puzzled, the window rolled down.
"Mr. Wu."
Seated in the Bentley was Wu Qingfeng, the president of the Yuanhong Group, who had previously competed with Zhao Fan for a rare ceramic vase. He was a well-known business tycoon.
Zhao Fan did not expect to run into Wu Qingfeng here. After greeting him, he cleared his throat and asked, "What brings you here, Mr. Wu?"
Wu Qingfeng smiled, "Just visiting a friend. And you, Mr. Zhao?"
"Yes." Nodding, Zhao Fan suddenly realized something and fixed his gaze on Wu Qingfeng.
"Mr. Wu, I hope this is not too forward, but could you do me a favor?"
Wu Qingfeng's expression changed slightly. "What do you need help with?"
Zhao Fan could see Wu Qingfeng's change in demeanor but, considering Zhao Yun'er, he steeled himself to speak.
"I was hoping you could put in a word with the hospital so that the child can receive a blood transfusion early."
His voice lowered, Zhao Fan felt somewhat embarrassed; the disparity in their status made even his words feel unwelcome.
He lowered his gaze and waited in silence.
A few minutes later, Wu Qingfeng asked, "Is that all?"
Zhao Fan instinctively responded, "What else would there be?"
Wu Qingfeng seemed to ponder for a moment.
"Cough, Lao Guo, go take care of this."
The man in the passenger seat responded promptly, "Yes, Second Master."
Lao Guo opened the car door, greeted Zhao Fan, and entered the hospital.
Through the door, Wu Qingfeng's expression softened considerably. "Leukemia is difficult to treat. If there's anything else you need, just give me a call."
Zhao Fan's heart skipped; the change in attitude was too drastic. He thought this but did not mention it and instead expressed his gratitude earnestly.
"Thank you, Mr. Wu."
The sudden change in address was due to Lao Guo's intervention. After thanking him, Zhao Fan felt a breath of relief and stood quietly to the side.
Before long, Lao Guo hurried back. "Second Master, I've already made the arrangements."
Wu Qingfeng nodded. "Mr. Zhao, see you later."
"See you."
As the Bentley drove away, Zhao Fan's smile faded. After a few minutes, he called Zhao's father to inform him that the blood transfusion issue had been resolved, then quietly left.
He still needed to fight for a future that everyone would cherish.
In the following two days, Zhao Fan was at the supermarket. Previously, he had planned to take Yang Yuqing to browse the supermarket, but due to a last-minute issue, the plan was postponed. It was not until the third day that Zhao Fan received a call from Yang Yuqing, expressing her desire to check out the supermarket.
During these three days, the supermarket's reputation had spread throughout Yang City; many people knew about the newly opened supermarket located centrally, which sold everything.
In no time, the flow of people had not diminished.
"I have divided the areas here; different regions have different products, but the first floor is quite compact," Zhao Fan explained as Yang Yuqing followed him, nodding in agreement as she looked around. "It really is quite compact. By the way, do you even sell facial cleansers?"
"Of course, I sell everything; I have to offer a variety."
Yang Yuqing gave him a thumbs up. "You are truly impressive!"
Such a store was unique in Yang City; previously, most were just general hardware stores.
"There are a lot of cosmetics abroad; I heard they have products for cleansing and hydrating the face. Do you have any here?"
Zhao Fan was taken aback, both by Yang Yuqing's keen observation and by the fact that he had completely forgotten about cosmetics.
"Not at the moment."
Yang Yuqing blinked. "Do you want some?"
Her rhetorical question struck Zhao Fan, and he almost instantly understood her implication.
"Miss Yang, could you help facilitate a connection?"
"Connecting is not a problem, but to reach a cooperation, it requires..." Yang Yuqing paused, her meaning clear.
Zhao Fan understood. "I understand."
Just as he finished speaking, his phone vibrated in his pocket. Checking it, he saw it was Zhao Haitan's number.
"Hello, Da..."
"Xiao Fan, it’s me. Your elder brother suddenly fainted."
The anxious voice of Zhao's mother came through, and Zhao Fan's expression changed. "I’ll head over right away."
He glanced at Yang Yuqing, who immediately reassured him that it was fine.
"Family comes first, you should go."
"I'm really sorry."
"It’s alright."
Zhao Fan hurried away, and by the time he arrived at the hospital, it was already an hour later. He rushed to room 806.
Upon entering the ward, Zhao Fan asked, "What happened?"
An hour had passed, and Zhao Haitan was awake, but judging by his complexion, no one would think he was well.
Zhao's mother stood nearby, her hands clenched, and upon hearing Zhao Fan's question, tears streamed down her face.
"The doctor said your elder brother fainted due to malnutrition and anemia."
Zhao Fan could understand malnutrition, but what was the cause of the anemia?
"Eldest brother, are you going to tell me or should I investigate?"
Sitting at the bedside with a serious expression, Zhao Fan’s tone turned cold.
The inexplicable pressure made Zhao Haitan instinctively shrink his neck, quietly admitting, "I... I just donated blood a little too much."
Donated blood a little too much?
Zhao Fan's gaze bore into Zhao Haitan. "What really happened?"
He would not believe Zhao Haitan's vague explanation.
"And if I remember correctly, I called earlier to tell Dad that Yun'er’s blood transfusion issue was resolved."
Zhao Haitan did not need to donate blood at all.
Zhao's mother wiped her tears. "Xiao Fan, don’t say that. The nurse said they hadn’t been informed."
