Chapter Ninety-Five: Boss, Let Me Cling to Your Coattails
Seeing the devouring bird leave in such humiliation, everyone laughed, Moon Chan included.
What a delightfully odd fellow. If the Heavenly Palace had someone like him, she would not have turned into such a cold woman.
“Boss, he’s awake...” Cao He called out a reminder.
The young man on the ground stirred once more. This time, the face before him was no longer the obnoxious mug of the devouring bird, but a handsome, striking face.
He gave a silent nod to himself and thought, I was scared to death. So that was a hallucination just now. I thought it was a bird that saved me, but it turned out to be a handsome young man...
Mm, that feels much better. As someone who cares a great deal about appearances, I simply cannot bear the fact that I was rescued by some ugly freak...
The unfortunate devouring bird was dragged into the matter again. It was fortunate he could not hear it, or he would surely have cooked the fellow alive on the spot.
After comforting himself, the young man struggled to his feet and asked politely, “Was it you who saved me?”
“Hm?” Ye Qiu froze for a moment, then shook his head. “No...”
“No?”
The young man looked puzzled, then turned to Cao He. “Was it you?”
Cao He said with amusement, “No, not me either.”
Not you either?
The young man’s heart immediately began to panic. Could that not have been a dream after all? Impossible. How could I possibly have been saved by a bird, and such an ugly one at that? That is absolutely impossible.
Full of deep doubt, the young man looked toward Moon Chan, who sat quietly nearby. His eyes suddenly lit up.
Damn, a fairy? Good heavens, there is actually a woman in this world so otherworldly and stunning. Unbelievable. Could it have been her who saved me?
Mm, very possible. After all, my reputation is quite good! And I am a little handsome, too. Maybe she took a liking to my looks, and that is why she saved me...
The more he thought, the more excited he became. He said eagerly to Moon Chan, “Fairy sister, it must have been you who saved me, right?”
As he called out, his heart brimmed with anticipation, his gaze practically saying, It was me, wasn’t it? It was me...
At that moment, Moon Chan cast him a cold glance and said, “Save you? I would find it troublesome even to kill you. You really think highly of yourself...”
What a blow. That brutally realistic splash of cold water sent half the young man’s soul freezing away at once.
He did not doubt her words in the slightest, because her eyes were far too cold. She was clearly not joking.
“Hahaha... hey, that’s going a bit too far. What sort of skill is it, terrifying a child like that!”
Ye Qiu could not help but laugh. Had this young man read too many novels and developed a fantasy syndrome? After getting hurt, he could still invent an entire romance plot in his head?
Not bad at all. He has the makings of a protagonist.
Come to think of it, the more he looked at him, the more fitting it seemed. He had appeared so miserably, yet he was somewhat handsome, too. His personality was a little foolish, true, but perhaps he was the type of protagonist found in absurd comedy. That was not impossible.
Moon Chan’s single glance had frightened the young man nearly to death. Ye Qiu shot her an exasperated look, then said to the young man, “Don’t be afraid. She may be a little cold in temperament, but she is not a bad person. She won’t do anything to you.”
“Tch, always acting like the good guy. Aren’t you tired of it?”
Moon Chan glanced at Ye Qiu, then turned away to continue admiring the scenery. She had originally wanted to intimidate the young man a little and teach him some manners, but Ye Qiu did not seem to appreciate it.
So be it. In any case, she could not be bothered with Ye Qiu’s affairs. With his cultivation, he would not run into any danger. Why should she worry?
Besides, over all these years, Ye Qiu had not exactly minded other people’s business less than anyone else. Take that Liu Jianchen, for example—he had been casually saved by Ye Qiu back then, and even given a painting.
And the result? He had become a sword immortal...
Faced with Moon Chan’s sarcasm, Ye Qiu was unconcerned and said calmly, “Meeting is fate. Some things cannot be explained clearly, nor can they be fully understood. Perhaps a small act you make today may one day help you in a tremendous way. Who can say for certain?
A person who is always kind may not end well, perhaps, but... having one more friend is better than having one more enemy, is it not?
If one truly reaches the point of being enemies with the whole world, how could one take even a single step forward?
We cannot possibly have smooth sailing all our lives. The words ‘life’ and ‘living’ are not so easy to fathom through and through...”
The moment Ye Qiu said this, Moon Chan’s heart trembled, and she gradually fell silent.
The matter of life was indeed not so easy to understand. As Ye Qiu said, no one could possibly sail through life without setbacks forever; there would always be troubles you could not solve.
But friends?
Moon Chan shook her head. She had no friends. Aside from Heaven Palace, she had only Ye Qiu, an old acquaintance. Even then, she could not quite tell what the relationship between them really was.
In truth, she did not know what she felt for Ye Qiu either.
Was it admiration?
He was like an elder brother, a big brother who had given her light, hope, and warmth during the darkest time of her life.
Or perhaps he was the only spiritual bond she had, the pillar of her spirit through years of stumbling in darkness.
And yet, that was not family affection.
“Hmph, I can’t be bothered with you!”
Moon Chan ignored Ye Qiu and returned to her thoughts. A thought of exposing Ye Qiu’s identity suddenly surfaced in her mind, but... that would only make things awkward for both of them. Better to keep it as it was.
At the very least, she could stay by his side. Even if his eyes held no trace of her, only gleaming gold...
Gold? What is so interesting about gold anyway.
Moon Chan rolled her eyes and suddenly felt as though she barely recognized herself. How had she come up with such an evil thought? Utterly absurd.
“All right, boy. Speak. What is your name? Where do you come from? And why are you so badly injured?”
Ye Qiu could not make sense of what this girl was thinking, so he simply stopped trying. Turning back, he asked the young man in confusion.
By now, the young man was staring at Ye Qiu with a vacant, foolish look. Suddenly, his inner excitement surged.
A reclusive master?
Damn, this must be an extraordinary expert. His understanding of life is on such a high level, spouting insights of this caliber the moment he opens his mouth. If he is not a master, then what is he?
And you still say it was not you who saved me? Aside from you, who else here could possess such a level of transcendence?
The young man was instantly thrilled. Grabbing hold of Ye Qiu’s leg, he cried out excitedly, “Boss! Let me cling to your thigh...”
Ye Qiu: “???”
That sudden “boss” left him utterly bewildered.
“Hey, hey, let go of me! What boss? I’m not some boss...”
Ye Qiu was speechless. Where had this oddball come from? He even knew terms like boss. Could he be a transmigrator?
“No, boss, please let me hold your thigh tightly. I will never let go even if you beat me to death!”
“Let go...”
“Nope...”
“Damn it, you’re even more shameless than that Liu fellow in the sky. Like a piece of chewing gum. Let go!”
Up in the sky, Liu Jianchen, fighting the Divine Mechanism Elder, suddenly sneezed and cursed in fury, “Which idiot is talking behind my back again? Damn it, once I finish off this dead old man, I’ll settle the score with him!”
“No, I won’t let go. Boss, please accept my kneeling respect and teach me two peerless techniques...”
The young man seemed determined that Ye Qiu was a true master and would not let go even if it killed him. He was even more shameless than Liu Jianchen.
Ye Qiu was completely stunned. Why was everyone I meet so utterly without bottom lines?
“If you do not let go this instant, I swear I’ll kick you to death. Do you believe me?”
At those words, the young man released him at once, scrambling backward on hands and feet to put some distance between himself and Ye Qiu.
