Lu Yan’s heart gave a sudden jolt, and he hurriedly asked, “When do you want to leave?”

“Can you arrange for someone to take me back today?”

Looking at the anxiety in his wife’s clear eyes, Lu Yan hesitated before replying, “Yes. Wait a moment.”

“Okay!”

Twenty minutes after Lu Yan left, he returned to find that his wife had already packed everything.

An’an was standing beside her as well.

He walked over to his wife, his voice gentle and reassuring. “Don’t panic. They’re only performing emergency treatment; it doesn’t mean he has passed away. Besides, he has no shortage of connections or resources around him.”

He wanted to add that whether his wife arrived earlier or later would not affect the course of Elder Qian’s illness. That was simply an objective fact. But his wife was an emotional person, and he knew he could not say such a thing.

Hearing Lu Yan’s words, Shen Qingyi felt somewhat relieved. Yes, Elder Qian had many disciples around him, and every one of them held an extraordinary position. Her heart eased considerably.

She looked up at Lu Yan and found him gazing intently at her. There was tenderness in his eyes, along with a trace of reluctance. Shen Qingyi’s heart trembled. She glanced at An’an beside them, hesitated for a moment, then said to her son, “I have a few things I want to say to your father in the room. Stay here and keep watch for us. Don’t let anyone come in.”

An’an’s little face was solemn. “Okay!”

Shen Qingyi went into the room, and Lu Yan followed behind her, his heart in turmoil. The next time they met, she would probably lay everything bare.

She was thinking of his work and his feelings after all. Just as one would expect from a professor’s student.

He had no idea what she wanted to say to him.

She gently closed the door. Just as he was anxiously wondering how he should respond, a soft embrace suddenly encircled his waist. The familiar scent rushing toward him made his heart pound.

In surprise, he raised both hands and froze for a moment. Then, as they fell, he wrapped her tightly in his arms.

His arms tightened of their own accord. He bent slightly, burying his chin in the hollow of her neck and greedily breathing in her familiar scent. This was the first time his wife had ever taken the initiative to come close to him.

“Lu Yan, do your work properly. Don’t stay up late, and eat your meals on time.” Shen Qingyi was held so tightly that her head was pressed against his broad, solid chest, leaving her slightly breathless and making her voice sound muffled.

The next time they met, she and this man would be strangers. At the thought, she suddenly no longer wanted to restrain herself.

Lu Yan lifted his chin from the hollow of her neck and gently stroked the top of her head. “All right,” he said warmly.

After holding her for quite some time, Shen Qingyi said, “I’m going to check on An’an.”

Lu Yan released her reluctantly, but still said, “All right.”

Shen Qingyi turned and opened the door. When she reached the main room, she saw An’an sitting on the sofa, blinking his large eyes. With a serious expression, he said, “Mom, I kept watch the whole time. No one came in.”

Shen Qingyi walked over and rubbed her son’s head. “Thank you, An’an.”

Just then, a jeep stopped outside the door. Shen Qingyi took An’an by the hand and was about to get into the vehicle when she saw Lu Yan standing behind them.

Shen Qingyi gave An’an’s hand a little tug. “Go give your father a hug!”

An’an let go of Shen Qingyi’s hand and ran to Lu Yan, wrapping both arms around his legs. “Dad, once you’ve finished your work, come home. Mom and I will wait for you.”

Lu Yan scooped up his son. “All right!”

He then walked over to Shen Qingyi, took the suitcase from her with one hand, and headed toward the car.

The young man driving was the same person who had taken Shen Qingyi into the city last time. Lu Yan instructed him, “Be careful on the road. Stop for meals when it’s time to eat. Don’t rush.”

“Yes, sir!”

Lu Yan closed the car door, and the vehicle started moving.

An’an leaned against the rear window, watching Lu Yan’s figure grow smaller and smaller until it disappeared from sight. Only then did he turn around and sit properly.

He saw that his mother was silent and expressionless, so he comforted her. “Mom, Grandpa Qian will definitely be fine. The last time we went there to play, he was still very strong and healthy.”

Shen Qingyi lowered her head and smiled at her son. “Mm. I’ll take your good wishes.”

They set out at eight in the morning and drove for nine hours, stopping to eat along the way. Shen Qingyi’s stomach felt so unwell that she could not swallow a single grain of rice.

By the time they arrived home at six in the evening, she had no strength left in her body.

At a little after nine that morning, Lu Caiqing had received a call from Lu Yan saying that Shen Qingyi and An’an would be coming home that day, probably arriving around five or six in the afternoon. She had then thoroughly tidied the entire house.

She had prepared dinner as well, making all the dishes that mother and son enjoyed.

When Shen Qingyi arrived home, her head was still spinning. She said to Lu Caiqing, “The driver is Xiao Yang from your second brother’s work unit. He drove the whole way and must be exhausted. Ask him to stay for dinner, and prepare a room for him so he can rest overnight before heading back.

“I feel terribly unwell, so I’m going to skip dinner for now. I’ll leave everything to you.”

“All right. Go and rest,” Lu Caiqing said, then went to attend to An’an and Xiao Yang.

She poured Xiao Yang a glass of water and took An’an to the backyard to wash his hands and face. Only then did she go to the kitchen and bring out all the prepared dishes.

They were in the middle of dinner when Xia Xiyue arrived.

When An’an saw him, he called out warmly, “Uncle Xia!”

Xiao Yang, who was eating, heard An’an’s voice and turned his head. At the doorway stood another imported luxury car, from which a man had just emerged carrying a large sack. Although the enormous woven-plastic bag was utterly out of place with the man in every way, it did nothing to diminish his distinguished air. He was every bit the equal of Engineer Lu.

Xia Xiyue dropped the large sack onto the floor and said to Lu Caiqing, “I found the goods for you.”

He then walked over to An’an. “Uncle Xia bought you a new toy. I’ll give it to you after you finish eating.”

Lu Caiqing and An’an thanked him repeatedly.

Xiao Yang had more or less guessed his identity. He was probably Engineer Lu’s brother-in-law.

He gave Xia Xiyue a polite smile, and Xia Xiyue returned it.

After exchanging greetings, Xia Xiyue glanced around and asked An’an, “Where’s your mother?”

“She got carsick. She’s resting in her room.”

Xia Xiyue looked toward the door of Shen Qingyi’s room, then returned to the sofa and waited quietly.

After dinner, An’an went back to the sofa. Xia Xiyue retrieved a large cardboard box from the car and handed it to him.

Lu Caiqing took Xiao Yang to show him his room.

An’an eagerly opened the toy. Inside was the latest silver robot.

Xia Xiyue installed the batteries for him and switched it on. The robot immediately began waving its arms and walking on its own.

An’an found it utterly fascinating. Uncle Xia had bought him a robot before, and that one could move too, but its hands did not wave. It had two wheels beneath its feet, and when switched on, it would drive straight ahead. Its mechanism was much like that of a little electric car: there was a small motor inside, and once powered, the motor drove the wheels forward.

But the coordinated movement of this robot’s arms and legs was clearly more complex. How did it achieve that?

He looked up at Xia Xiyue. “Uncle Xia, what makes this robot’s arms and legs move in coordination?”

Xia Xiyue took the robot from An’an and glanced at the instruction manual. In the end, he said apologetically, “Uncle Xia really doesn’t know. I’ll find someone to ask for you later.”

An’an smiled. “Thank you, Uncle Xia, but there’s no need to ask anyone else. I’ll just ask my father directly when he comes home next time.”
