The weather in Jing City had been gloomy recently, with the autumn wind howling bleakly. Lin Xi wore a knee-length trench coat, her curly hair cascading in front of her. With her hands tucked in her pockets, she glanced at Song Ning expressionlessly.

Outsiders often said Lin Xi bore some resemblance to Song Ning.

But that wasn’t quite accurate.

They were completely different in style. At most, one could find a faint trace of similarity in their brows and eyes, just barely enough to say they looked alike.

“I can’t help you,” Lin Xi said without leaving any room for negotiation.

“I can apologize for the past! Back then, I was blinded by my obsession with Qin Yu, which made me say a few harsh words to you. I’m sorry. But now, my matters are my own problems; they shouldn’t involve my father, right?”

“Let’s put the past behind us. Now…”

“Why should we just forget the past?” Lin Xi interrupted, finding Song Ning’s words amusing. A faint smile curved her lips. “How do you have the nerve to say that?”

“I know I was wrong. It wasn’t just my idea back then! It was Qin Yu’s mother who made me say those things to you! Now, if you just go find Qin Yu…”

“Tsk. I already told you, no one can stop this matter. You’re wasting your efforts.”

“Even if Qin Yu could intervene, that’s between you two. If you can reach him, then good for you. But don’t expect anything from me.”

“Instead of coming to me, you might as well go to Aunt Rong.”

“I’ve tried! She won’t see me at all!”

“That’s your problem,” Lin Xi shrugged. “Don’t say I’m unrelated to this and can’t help you. Even if it involved me, I wouldn’t defend you.”

“Instead of wasting time talking nonsense with me, go back and reconsider the current situation.”

“Let me remind you, it’s not just that your father is implicated anymore. Understand this: the fire is about to burn you.”

She withdrew her gaze and glanced at her watch. “I have work to do.”

Without looking back, Lin Xi walked past Song Ning and left.

The next moment, someone grabbed her arm from behind. Lin Xi frowned and swung her hand to break free.

Before she could exert force, a sharp scream came from behind. Lin Xi froze, turning around in surprise.

Bai Xu had appeared out of nowhere, mercilessly throwing Song Ning to the ground.

Behind Bai Xu hurried Qin Yu, who strode directly toward Lin Xi, ignoring the figure on the ground. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her away.

Before leaving, Lin Xi cast a cold glance at Song Ning on the floor but said nothing.

After allowing Qin Yu to lead her for a while, with the Feiyun Company building looming opposite, Lin Xi struggled and said, “Let go of me.”

Seeing he remained indifferent, she sighed, “There are too many colleagues around. I don’t want to explain.”

It was work hours, and many people nearby were from Feiyun. Her past relationship with Cheng Si had already caused quite a stir throughout the company; she was too lazy to explain again. Now, if people saw her tangled up with Qin Yu, who knew what rumors would start.

Probably another drama.

Qin Yu must have thought of this too. Though reluctant, he finally released her.

Lin Xi stepped back two paces to create some distance, then sat down on an empty seat by the bus stop, tilting her head up to look at him.

The man was dressed in a sharp suit, tall and slim, standing by her side shielding her from the wind.

But his expression was dark, mirroring the gloomy weather—clouded and sullen.

Lin Xi avoided his gaze, lowering her head to rub her wrist. “We just talked briefly. Nothing serious.”

“It’s clear she didn’t gain much from you all.”

“Otherwise, she wouldn’t have come to me, so convinced that only I could save her father.”

“There’s no hope left for her father’s matter, right?”

Qin Yu’s eyes never left her. Knowing Song Ning was nearby early that morning, he had rushed over first thing and had even run into Bai Xu on the way.

Just as he suspected, Bai Xu had been watching Song Ning’s movements closely.

Fortunately, nothing happened.

After watching Lin Xi for a while and confirming she wasn’t angry, Qin Yu finally spoke slowly: “If nothing unexpected occurs, the result will be out next week.”

Surprised, Lin Xi raised an eyebrow. “So soon?”

“Third Brother is ruthless.”

Qin Yu didn’t try to defend himself; after all, he had been pushing this matter behind the scenes.

Noticing Chen Gong’s car across the street, Lin Xi stood up. “I have to get to work.”

“Mm.” Qin Yu made space for her, his gaze sweeping over her features. His tone was firm, not a suggestion: “I’ll pick you up tonight.”

“No need.”

Thinking he might be worried about Song Ning, Lin Xi smiled helplessly. “She wouldn’t dare do anything.”

“If we really need to guard against her, would that mean I have to pick you up and drop you off every day?”

Her words were meant as a joke, but after exchanging a look with Qin Yu, he suddenly agreed, “Fine.”

Lin Xi was speechless.

“I’m just saying it casually; no need to trouble Third Brother.” She was capable and had self-defense tools in her bag. Even if a direct confrontation with Song Ning occurred, it wouldn’t be a big problem.

“No trouble. The house next door to you has been empty. I’ll move in there this afternoon.”

“…”

Lin Xi tugged at the corner of her mouth, somewhat exasperated.

That night, Lin Xi deliberately turned off her phone and continued working late. As others gradually left, she lingered in the office for another half hour. After checking several times by the window and confirming Qin Yu wasn’t downstairs, she packed up and left.

As she exited the elevator, she pondered whether to turn her phone back on.

After all, Qin Yu wasn’t here.

He probably just wanted to talk in the morning.

The distance from here to the LX Capital headquarters was in completely opposite directions. Qin Yu was unlikely to actually move here.

Lin Xi’s current apartment was a luxury building, and she was quite satisfied living there. But for Qin Yu, this place probably wasn’t suitable.

When the elevator reached the lobby, Lin Xi pocketed her phone and strode out.

Just as she entered the lobby, her eyes caught sight of something that made her stop abruptly.

Opposite the reception desk on the first floor of Feiyun were several chairs for visitors to rest. At this hour, there shouldn’t be any guests here.

Yet, a man sat alone in one of the chairs, his long legs crossed naturally. From Lin Xi’s angle, he looked down slightly, almost asleep.

She glanced at the time—it was already four hours past her usual finishing time.

If Qin Yu had been waiting here from the start, that meant…

He had been waiting for her for four hours.

Lin Xi quickly turned on her phone, hoping to find missed calls or messages.

But there were none.

He had silently waited here all this time.
