Chapter 36: Identity Revealed
"So, my goal this time is to break through and become a martial artist during the special recruitment assessment, and then get into Yanjing Martial Arts University. I’ll be perfectly satisfied with that!" Nan Wu said with a look of longing.
"By the way, brother, I haven't asked about your goal yet. What is your goal?"
Yang Feng smiled. "First place!"
Nan Wu froze, assuming Yang Feng was just joking.
"You've got ambition, brother! Even though I know you're joking, I still have to tell you how difficult it is to get first place in this special recruitment assessment!"
"Let's not even talk about the top-ranked genius martial artists for now. Since you want to get first, these are the hurdles you absolutely must overcome!"
"Which ones?" Yang Feng asked curiously.
"First is the top genius martial artist of Nantong, Nangong Hang! I hear his blood-energy value has already reached 8, and his Nangong Spear Technique is approaching the realm of a Grandmaster. For us martial artists, we can only see his back as he pulls away!"
"Second is the second-ranked genius of Nantong, Xiang Yang. His blood-energy is on par with Nangong Hang's, and he is a Strength-type awakener who can fight a Second-Tier martial artist briefly without losing!"
"Third is the top martial arts genius from our own Kaizhou City. Although his blood-energy is two points lower than the previous two, he is a Lightning-type ability awakener. Coupled with the fact that he practices a high-level Lightning-type breathing technique, it’s not just a simple case of one plus one; his head-on strength is truly not weaker than those two from Nantong!"
"Fourth is the sword genius from Qingyuan City, Bai Wu. Even though his blood-energy isn't high, he has already comprehended Sword Intent. At such a young age, you could almost call him a Sword Grandmaster."
"Besides these, there are many other powerful geniuses I haven't mentioned, like the top-ranked person from every city. How could their strength be weak?"
"So, if you want to get first place, take my advice: go home, wash up, and go to sleep!"
Yang Feng didn't expect that while Nan Wu’s strength was nothing special, he certainly knew a lot! If Nan Wu knew what Yang Feng was thinking, he would probably be so angry he'd cough up blood. Unfortunately, he didn't know.
Seeming to reach a point of excitement, Nan Wu suddenly lowered his voice and said, "I also heard a piece of inside information. They say that Song City, which has ranked last for years, has produced a Second-Tier genius martial artist this year. If that’s true, what do you have to compete for first place?"
Yang Feng: "..."
"Brother, where are you from?" Nan Wu suddenly asked curiously.
"I'm from Song City," Yang Feng replied.
"Oh, oh. So, is it true that a Second-Tier martial artist appeared there?" Nan Wu's eyes widened, his soul of gossip burning bright.
"It should be true. It was even broadcast on the Song City news," Yang Feng could only say.
"Oh, then it must be true. It's a pity we don't have the Song City TV station here. I'll search for it online now." As he spoke, Nan Wu began typing into his phone.
Yang Feng’s expression became slightly subtle. Is this guy’s initiative this strong?
"Ah, found it! Here it is. It was pretty hard to find, though; it feels like your side in Song City is deliberately suppressing the news."
"These clips are all quite blurry; it’s not even an official video." Nan Wu complained while searching.
"Yang Feng, a senior student in Class 13 of Song City No. 1 High School, only eighteen years old, confirmed as a Second-Tier martial artist by the President himself on May 15th!"
As Nan Wu read the name Yang Feng, he felt it sounded familiar. Then it clicked: "Brother, you have the exact same name as this Second-Tier martial artist. The exact same... the exact same..."
The voice of the last few words grew quieter and quieter. Just then, the video happened to show Yang Feng’s face.
Nan Wu: "..."
"Big Shot!" Nan Wu, finally reacting, excitedly tried to grab Yang Feng’s hand, but Yang Feng dodged it.
Yang Feng had no choice but to say, "You can just call me Yang Feng!"
"Alright, Big Shot. May I ask, are you really Second-Tier?"
"I suppose so!"
Nan Wu was even more excited now. He hadn't expected his luck to be so good—just making small talk on the train and he’d bumped into the ultimate king. It really was true that making more friends was never a mistake.
"Big Shot, when the assessment starts, if you see me, please, I beg you to go easy on me and spare this little brother!"
Yang Feng was amused. "The assessment hasn't even started yet; how do you know I'll run into you?"
"I'm just speaking hypothetically!" Nan Wu gave a fawning smile.
Yang Feng thought about it; the guy had provided him with quite a bit of information, so he nodded. "Sure."
Nan Wu jumped for joy, his attitude toward Yang Feng becoming even more polite and enthusiastic. As long as he latched onto this thigh, maybe with the Big Shot's help, he could make it into the top 100 of the special recruitment! Nan Wu thought to himself.
Soon, the train arrived at the station. Yang Feng had originally planned to take a taxi to the assessment site.
But he was stopped by Nan Wu. "Brother Feng, don't bother with a taxi. My family has some business in Nantong, and a driver will be here to pick me up soon. Let's go together!"
Yang Feng was a bit surprised, but he didn't refuse; having a ride was more convenient.
"What does your family do?" Yang Feng asked.
"Our family is in the herb business. The 'Hall of Medicine' in Kaizhou belongs to us," Nan Wu said, looking a bit embarrassed.
Now it was Yang Feng's turn to be shocked. He had heard of the Hall of Medicine—it was a pharmaceutical company with a market value of tens of billions. He hadn't expected this guy, who looked so plain, to actually be a wealthy second-generation heir.
Soon, a luxury car worth millions pulled up in front of them. "Brother Feng, get in!" Nan Wu opened the door for Yang Feng personally.
Yang Feng didn't stand on ceremony and sat right in. He had to admit, a luxury car really was different. It was comfortable to sit in, and it had more features than the cars on Earth in his previous life!
Under the driver's expert driving, it took another half hour for them to reach the assessment site for the special recruitment. It was in the suburbs of Nantong, and what appeared before them was a massive, heavily guarded military base!
The base was surrounded by a concrete wall seven or eight meters high, topped with three meters of barbed wire. On the walls were signs reading: "High Voltage, Do Not Approach!"
There was a squad of soldiers standing guard at the gate! The entire assessment site gave off a sense of immense pressure.
Cars weren't allowed inside, so Nan Wu and Yang Feng had to get out a hundred meters from the gate and walk the rest of the way. They arrived at the guards and presented their identification. During this process, Yang Feng could feel the pressure coming from the guards—even the sentries were at the level of Second-Tier martial artists! It showed just how much the Nantong municipal government valued this event.
"That's fine. The identification is in order. You may enter." With that, they stepped aside and opened the gate.
Watching the gate slowly open, Nan Wu looked very excited. But Yang Feng remained calm. A Grandmaster's poise isn't just talk; as long as he wishes, he can maintain his composure even in the most adverse conditions.
