Volume One, Chapter 20: Playing Dead!
Lin Beiye remained silent, pressing cautiously against the door crack, his eyes fixed intently on every movement of the ghost. Seeing his lack of response, Lu Li quietly crept over to the door crack as well, joining him in watching.
Lin Beiye glanced down at her and whispered, “Do you see it? That’s the one.”
Lu Li swallowed nervously and nodded. If Lin Beiye hadn’t acted in time just now, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
She lifted her eyes slightly, her voice trembling, “Thank you.”
Lin Beiye gave her a sidelong glance and replied coolly, “About before, I apologize.”
Lu Li was momentarily stunned, memories of being pulled into Lin Beiye’s embrace flooding her mind. Her cheeks flushed deeply, and she lowered her head silently, too shy to speak.
Unexpectedly, Lin Beiye drew her into his arms once more. Her heart instantly quickened.
Before she could struggle, he whispered softly in her ear, “Shh, don’t make a sound. The ghost is stirring.”
Lu Li immediately held her breath and nodded quickly, not daring to move.
Suddenly, a knock sounded sharply outside the corridor.
Lin Beiye reacted swiftly, releasing his hold on her and whispering, “Stay here. Don’t go anywhere. I’ll be back soon.”
Lu Li seemed unaccustomed to the sudden separation. Instinctively, she grasped his sleeve, her eyes filled with worry.
Lin Beiye paused and turned to her. “What’s wrong?”
Biting her lip, Lu Li asked anxiously, “Where are you going?”
Lin Beiye didn’t hide it. “There are too many people in the broadcast station. I need to lure the ghost away.”
“What?!” Lu Li was shocked. “That’s a ghost! You’ll die!”
Lin Beiye found it hard to explain. After all, this was the perfect chance to get rid of the listening device. More importantly, it was an opportunity to confirm whether Ye Zheng was also inside the broadcast station.
He shrugged nonchalantly, “You can’t just stand by and watch because you’re afraid to die.”
Without waiting for her reply, he pushed open the door and stepped outside.
Lu Li could only watch silently as he left, whispering, “Be careful. I’ll wait for you to come back.”
At that moment, the broadcast station door began to slowly open.
Lin Beiye shouted urgently, “Don’t open the door! Close it tight!”
Hearing the shout in the corridor, those inside quickly shut the door firmly.
Suddenly, a piercing roar echoed outside.
The middle-aged man’s ghost, seemingly enraged by Lin Beiye’s actions, twisted his grotesque form and lunged wildly toward him.
---
Lin Beiye swiftly dodged to the side, evading the ghost’s attack with ease.
A cold smile played at the corner of his lips as he murmured, “Come on, keep going.”
With that, he pulled a listening device from his pocket and decisively crushed it underfoot.
At the same time, a harsh electric crackle sounded from the device’s backend.
Li Yan and Yao Zhihan stared at each other in stunned silence.
“He… he…” Yao Zhihan was so shocked she could barely speak.
They had just heard Lin Beiye say he was going to lure the ghost away, and now the listening device suddenly stopped working.
Naturally, it made them wonder if Lin Beiye had met some misfortune.
Li Yan hadn’t expected Lin Beiye to be so reckless.
Although she knew he was no ordinary person, challenging a ghost alone seemed foolhardy.
Even the lowest-level spirits were beyond what an ordinary person could confront.
Li Yan frowned, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Does he have some serious illness? How could he be so daring?”
This was the most baffling moment in Li Yan’s life.
Yao Zhihan shook her head bewilderedly. “I don’t understand. I just don’t.”
Then she asked, “Yan, what do we do now? Should we stop the test?”
Li Yan waved her off with a sigh. “No need. Just as long as he doesn’t die in there.”
---
Inside the first psychiatric hospital, freed from the constraints of the listening device, Lin Beiye moved without restraint.
He led the ghost into a room.
Suddenly, the ghostly energy within him surged like a tidal wave, rising relentlessly!
The invisible pressure sent chills through everyone on the sixth floor.
In the darkness, Lin Beiye beckoned the ghost with a finger, taunting it to attack.
Though not a high-level specter, the ghost’s instincts for danger were acute.
It instinctively recoiled, seemingly desperate to escape.
But Lin Beiye had no intention of letting it go so easily.
“If you won’t come, then I’ll come to you.”
Before he finished, he vanished and appeared right behind the ghost, whispering mockingly in its ear, “Is that all you’ve got?”
The ghost’s face twisted in terror at the sudden move, letting out a piercing scream.
For a moment, the spirit was confused about who was truly the ghost.
---
Lin Beiye wasted no words.
He acted decisively, pressing one hand down on the ghost’s head and smashing it forcefully downward.
The ghost was powerless to resist, trying to use its abilities to create illusions and escape.
But before Lin Beiye, its feeble spirit energy was not only impossible to release — even approaching him was extraordinarily difficult.
Under the overwhelming pressure of Lin Beiye’s spirit energy, the ghost was completely at his mercy.
After what felt like an eternity, Lin Beiye glanced at the ghost, now barely clinging to life.
He lifted it up coldly and said, “You’re lucky. If you were outside, I’d have used you as a sacrificial flag long ago.”
With that, he kicked the ghost viciously away.
Harshly, he spat one word: “Scram.”
Lin Beiye knew that spirits in this space couldn’t be easily dispersed.
Even a single one less would raise suspicion during investigations.
After all, he was just an ordinary person without a pact to ghosts — he couldn’t simply slay spirits.
As the middle-aged man’s ghost retreated, Lin Beiye exhaled deeply.
He looked down at his clothes — still pristine, as if untouched by any fierce battle.
He then tore several rips deliberately and yanked off one sleeve harshly.
He crafted the image of someone battered after a ghostly fight.
Satisfied, Lin Beiye nodded.
Dragging his “seriously wounded” body, he returned to the previous room.
Lu Li had been silently praying with her eyes closed.
Only when she heard the door open did she slowly open her eyes.
But the sight before her was Lin Beiye, nearly on the brink of collapse.
She hurried forward to check his wounds.
“You… how are you so badly hurt?”
Her voice choked with tears, filled with deep worry.
