Volume One, Chapter Two: The Harbingers of Life and Death
Lin Beiye was momentarily stunned. Run away? Damn it! He had forgotten! He was still just an ordinary person! He couldn’t possibly explain that these two ghosts were actually summoned by him, so there was no need to flee, could he?
In this world, although humans could make contracts with ghosts, they absolutely could not summon or control them! If he said otherwise, it would indirectly reveal that Lin Beiye himself was a ghost; otherwise, none of this could be explained!
Helpless, Lin Beiye had no choice but to feign terror, stuttering, “Teacher... I... I’m just too scared.” As he spoke, he covertly signaled Black and White Wuchang, hinting they should go and catch the ghost.
But after receiving the command, Black and White Wuchang turned and bowed respectfully in his direction!
This sight left everyone present completely dumbfounded, cold sweat dripping down their faces—Lin Beiye included, who was startled himself! Fortunately, no one understood the true meaning behind Black and White Wuchang’s gesture. Otherwise, Lin Beiye’s days of peace would surely be over!
Meanwhile, Li Jinhe, though her throat was gripped by the old man’s ghost, managed to resist with the power of her ghost contract. When Black and White Wuchang appeared, she could clearly sense the rank of these two spectral beings—the oppressive aura indicated they were at least of Ghost King caliber!
In her dazed state, she seemed to see Lin Beiye communicating with the two ghosts. The scene left her greatly shaken! Yet now, she had no time to ponder whether she had seen it wrong. The most important thing was to deal with the old man’s ghost as soon as possible!
Li Jinhe took a deep breath, cautiously pushing her ghostly energy to its limit. The crimson flames on her body surged violently.
Sparks spiraled around her, their momentum soaring ever higher! Just as she was poised to unleash a deadly strike, Black and White Wuchang suddenly charged in her direction!
Li Jinhe’s eyes widened, her heart seemingly seized by an invisible hand and stopped beating. She cried inwardly, “It’s over!” Yet, just as she feared death’s approach, Black Wuchang struck, sending the old man’s ghost flying several meters away.
“Old White, take it easy, don’t scatter this ghost,” Black Wuchang said, twisting his neck and reminding his companion.
White Wuchang replied casually, “Relax, I know what I’m doing. Our master instructed us to capture all the ghosts here.”
“Let’s split up; that’ll be more efficient,” Black Wuchang nodded.
“Fine, I’ll leave this little ghost to you,” he said, brushing past Li Jinhe and soaring into the air.
Li Jinhe felt a chill—she could sense the overwhelming pressure as Black Wuchang passed, so intense even her contracted ghost dared not make a single sound, like a mouse before a cat.
“Little girl, this is no longer your concern,” White Wuchang glanced back at Li Jinhe.
His gaze made her uneasy. Ghosts’ emotions were notoriously unstable, and infighting was common. Li Jinhe steadied her nerves and cautiously asked, “You... what kind of ghosts are you?”
White Wuchang smiled, “Ghost messengers—specialized in catching ghosts.”
“Ghost messengers?” Li Jinhe tilted her head in confusion. “What’s that?”
But before she could finish, White Wuchang rushed toward the old man’s ghost. The powerful pressure made the old man’s ghost feel suffocated, fear flooding him as he desperately sought escape. His body twisted and trembled, crawling along the cold wall like a giant gecko.
Yet White Wuchang would never let him go so easily. His mourning staff crashed down like lightning, instantly restoring the old man’s ghost to its true form!
The old man’s ghost wailed in agony, his cries nearly hopeless.
The old man’s ghost wanted to beg for mercy, but White Wuchang showed no compassion. With a mocking smile, he said, “This is not where you belong.”
“Old Black, I’m done over here,” White Wuchang called to the sky. “Just waiting for you to come and take these souls back to the Ghost Domain.”
“Alright, I’m on it,” replied Black Wuchang, immediately casting his soul-capturing rope to bind the wandering spirits in the air.
In an instant, all the spirits were bundled up by Black Wuchang.
“Master, our task is complete. Now Old White and I will take these spirits back to the Ghost Domain.”
With that, Black and White Wuchang bowed again to Lin Beiye and then vanished, taking the ghosts with them.

Tianzhou City, Ghost-Slaying Division Branch.
“Sister Yan! The abnormal readings in the eastern district have escalated!”
“What!? Show me!”
“Sister Yan! After analysis, the eastern district’s abnormal readings have... have reached S-class!”
“S-class!? Where’s the source of the anomaly?”
“Sister Yan! It’s... it’s at East City High School!”
“Jinhe’s school!?”
“Sister Yan! Should we request reinforcements from headquarters?”
“There’s no time... Tell the squad ahead... don’t bother going. Also... prepare a citywide alert... The eastern district... has fallen...”
Li Yan gazed solemnly toward the eastern district. “Jinhe... I’m sorry... your sister failed to protect you...”
“Sister Yan... I’ve finished the notice draft. I’ll inform the city’s residents now...”
“Mm...” Li Yan replied softly.
“Wait!” Someone suddenly called out.
“What is it?” Li Yan turned back.
“Sister Yan! The abnormal readings in the eastern district have all disappeared!”
