Volume One, Chapter 13: A Narrow Escape!
Li Jinhe’s eyes suddenly widened, a strange tension swelling in her heart. She hurriedly looked back, but the corridor was empty.
She couldn’t help but shout loudly, “Who are you? Why are you at East City Middle School?”
Her voice echoed through the vacant hallway, but there was no response.
A wave of panic washed over Li Jinhe as she anxiously scanned her surroundings, trying to catch a glimpse of the mysterious figure. Yet no matter how hard she searched, there was no sign of anyone.
Unbeknownst to her, Lin Beiye had already used his newly acquired ability to swiftly hide behind a section of the wall.
Pressing himself close against the wall, Lin Beiye exhaled deeply. “That was close... good thing I’m fast.”
Suddenly, he remembered he hadn’t checked in with his family today. Seizing the moment, he reached for his phone to make amends. But to his horror, his hand found only emptiness—his phone was gone!
His heart sank. He quickly crawled to the corner of the wall and cautiously peeked toward the classroom.
“No way! Did I leave it inside the classroom?”
His heart seemed to stop for a moment. If it was discovered, how could he possibly explain?
His mind raced with possibilities, weighing the risks carefully.
In the end, he decided to return to the classroom—but this time, under the guise of an ordinary student who had simply forgotten something.
Taking a deep breath, he tidied his slightly disheveled clothes and pretended to be calm as he walked toward the classroom.
But the instant he stepped into the corridor, Li Jinhe pounced like a predator.
A streak of red light cut through the dark hallway like a brilliant meteor flashing across the night sky—beautiful and thrilling.
Lin Beiye’s heart tightened as he shouted, “It’s me, Lin Beiye!”
His sharp cry thundered through the night like a clap of lightning.
Li Jinhe froze momentarily, then swiftly rolled backward several times.
Bathed in the moonlight, she clearly saw Lin Beiye’s face.
Her delicate brows furrowed, confusion coloring her voice: “Lin Beiye? Why are you at school so late at night?”
Hearing this, Lin Beiye was speechless.
He thought, You’re at school late at night too, aren’t you?
“Well... I left my phone at school. I came back to get it,” he replied.
“Your phone?” Li Jinhe nodded skeptically.
Then, with unusual excitement, she stepped closer and asked, “By the way, did you see anyone else just now?”
Lin Beiye shook his head. “Anyone? I just got here.”
Seeing that Lin Beiye hadn’t seen anyone, Li Jinhe sighed with slight disappointment. “Forget it. But you should leave soon. I suspect our school might be haunted.”
“What?!” Lin Beiye feigned terror, exaggerating his frightened expression. “Seriously? Don’t scare me like that!”
Li Jinhe gave him a disdainful glance. She truly couldn’t understand why her sister would recommend someone like him.
“Just go home quickly,” she urged.
Lin Beiye nodded. “I’ll grab my phone and leave.”
With that, he headed toward the classroom.
Li Jinhe followed behind, her mood sour but still choosing to keep pace.
At that moment, Lin Beiye asked, “Why are you here so late? Did you forget something too?”
Li Jinhe pursed her lips slightly and said softly, “No, I just wanted to see the school. Maybe I won’t get another chance.”
“See the school? Won’t have another chance?” Lin Beiye was puzzled. “What do you mean?”
Before he could finish, Li Jinhe impatiently replied, “Nothing. Just what it sounds like. Hurry up, get your stuff, and go.”
Seeing her attitude, Lin Beiye gave up asking more questions and walked straight into the classroom.
The room was still in disarray.
But this time, Lin Beiye acted like a drama king, feigning extreme panic.
He glanced around anxiously, his face full of worry. “What’s going on here?”
Li Jinhe stood beside him, calm as if she had expected this. “I told you before, there might be ghosts here. Just get your things and leave as soon as you can.”
Lin Beiye nodded slightly and began searching for his phone.
Before long, he found it on the floor.
He breathed a sigh of relief. “Found it! I’m leaving now.”
He turned to leave the classroom, but his steps slowed at the door.
He glanced back at Li Jinhe and asked, “Aren’t you leaving?”
Li Jinhe paused briefly, then shook her head. “I need to tell my sister what just happened. You be careful on your way home.”
Hearing this, Lin Beiye didn’t hesitate and quickly turned to leave.
Li Jinhe watched his retreating figure with a frown, muttering, “What a coward.”
Lin Beiye’s steps were light and swift as he fled the school.
Once outside the gate, he glanced back and muttered under his breath, “Those two sisters really know how to stir things up.”
He stopped to catch his breath, then took out his phone to send a brief message to his family.
After sending it, he put the phone away and resumed his journey home.
The night was calm, streetlights flickering in the breeze.
From afar, the faint sounds of cats and dogs added a touch of life to the quiet evening.
Lin Beiye stretched out his limbs, bored.
The apartment where he lived wasn’t far from the school.
Originally, he lived with his parents and sister, but due to their work relocation, they had moved back to their hometown in Tiandu City.
Now he was alone in Tianzhou City.
So he rented a cheap apartment near the school as a temporary place to stay.
Back at the apartment building, he pressed the elevator button as usual.
Just as his fingers grazed it, a slender hand suddenly rested on the elevator door.
Lin Beiye’s heart tightened. He turned toward the delicate voice calling out, “Wait, wait!”
The elevator doors slowly opened.
Before him stood a cute girl with long black hair.
She smiled sweetly and stepped inside. “Sorry for scaring you just now.”
Lin Beiye shook his head tentatively. “It’s okay. Which floor are you going to?”
“Fourth floor,” she said, holding up four fingers.
Lin Beiye looked surprised. “You live on the fourth floor too? I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”
“Oh, you live on the fourth floor too!” she smiled and introduced herself, “I’m Yao Zhihan. I just moved in today. Looks like we’re neighbors from now on.”
