Chapter 43: The Path to Uncovering the Secrets of the Demon Realm
The night was as ink, and the mountain winds howled. Yun Yao stood upon the peak, her robes fluttering in the gale. She knew deep down that the source of that chilling aura was no coincidence; it was surely the handiwork of the remnants of the Demon Realm’s evil forces. Although the disciples of the Immortal Sect cheered for her, she understood that the true threat had yet to be extinguished.
She turned to face those who had caught up to her, her gaze as steadfast as bedrock. "Everyone, I can feel it. That evil aura has not dissipated; instead, it shows signs of a resurgence. I must delve into the Demon Realm to uncover the truth once and for all."
Elder Cangsong hurriedly cautioned, "Yun Yao, the Demon Realm is treacherous. You have just achieved a great victory; do not take such risks lightly!" Ling Yue and Fei Yu also wore expressions of concern, adding their voices to the plea. Yet, Yun Yao’s resolve was set.
At dawn the next day, amidst the complex gazes of the crowd, Yun Yao resolutely stepped into the Demon Realm. The realm was dim and damp, the air thick with a foul,腥 stench. She had not gone far before she sensed an anomaly in the atmosphere. Suddenly, a rustling sound erupted from all directions. Dozens of hideous demons leaped from the brush, brandishing sharp claws and letting out guttural roars as they coordinated an attack against her.
These demons were clearly trained, their offensive fierce and leaving Yun Yao little room to maneuver. The winds whipped up by their claws tore through the air with shrill shrieks, the putrid smell rushing toward her. Undaunted, Yun Yao remained calm. As she dodged their strikes, she employed her mind-reading ability to anticipate their intentions. She moved with agility, like a butterfly dancing through a field of flowers, every evasion precise and timely.
Spotting an opening, she struck a wolf demon in the abdomen, sending it flying. Sidestepping a fox demon’s claw, she countered with a sword strike to its throat; with a flash of cold steel, it crumpled to the ground. The battle raged for some time, and under her assault, the once-coordinated demons began to scatter. The lesser demons watching from the sidelines stared in wide-eyed shock.
Yun Yao narrowed her eyes, scanning the surroundings. Suddenly, she froze, struck by an intense sense of crisis. "Something is wrong..." she murmured to herself.
At that moment, a cold voice sounded from behind her: "It seems you are more difficult to deal with than I imagined."
Yun Yao whirled around to see a man in black robes standing nearby, wearing a sinister grin and holding a strange bell. The chime of the bell was crisp, yet it sent a wave of dizziness crashing over her. She fought through the discomfort, staring at him vigilantly. "Who are you?"
"Heh, I am the Night Wolf Demon, sent to claim your life." The demon let out a chilling laugh, and the ringing grew more frantic. Yun Yao felt her internal spiritual energy spiral into chaos, becoming difficult to channel. Seeing her incapacitated, the Night Wolf Demon roared with triumph. He waved the bell, chanting incantations as the surrounding demonic energy converged into a massive black vortex, engulfing her.
Yun Yao bit her lip, enduring the agonizing headache as she fought to stay conscious. She knew that if she were swallowed by this vortex, the consequences would be dire. She had to find a way out! Glancing around, she spotted a concealed cave nearby.
Her mind raced, and a plan formed. Taking advantage of the Night Wolf Demon’s arrogance, she suddenly erupted with spiritual power, shattering the interference of the bell’s chime. With lightning speed, she flashed into the cave.
The cave was dark and damp, filled with the scent of decay. Yun Yao held her breath, carefully fumbling her way forward. Deep within the cavern, the faint sound of evil whispers sent a chill down her spine. Following the sound, she discovered that the end of the cave held a hidden space. It was a clandestine altar, covered in bizarre runes that emanated a bone-chilling aura. In the center lay a black stone, radiating intense demonic energy.
Yun Yao realized this stone was likely the source of the evil forces. She carefully observed the runes, noting their similarity to those she had seen elsewhere in the Demon Realm; they appeared to be part of some dark ritual. She quickly recorded the runes and searched the vicinity, finding a tattered book in a corner. The text contained secrets of the Demon Realm, mentioning a powerful demon named the "Ancestor of the Netherworld."
"The Ancestor of the Netherworld? Could he be the mastermind?" Yun Yao felt a jolt of shock. The name was legendary in the Demon Realm; she had not expected him to be linked to this evil force.
Just as she prepared to leave, a cold, clear voice sounded behind her: "What are you doing here?"
Yun Yao turned to see a woman in white standing at the cave entrance—the renowned Fairy Snow Fox. She looked at Yun Yao with complex emotions, a hint of wariness in her eyes. "I..." Yun Yao began to explain, but the Fairy interrupted.
"I know you are investigating the evil forces, but I advise you not to go any deeper. It is too dangerous for you," the Fairy said solemnly. "There are some things you are not meant to interfere with."
Yun Yao frowned. She knew the Fairy meant well, but having found a crucial clue, how could she give up now? "I must see this through to the end!"
"You..." The Fairy wanted to dissuade her further, but seeing the determination in Yun Yao’s eyes, she sighed. "Very well. Just be careful."
Yun Yao nodded and turned to leave. "Wait," the Fairy called out. "I know what you are thinking, but there are some things you are better off not knowing."
"What do you mean?" Yun Yao asked, puzzled. The Fairy did not answer, merely giving her a deep, lingering look before turning and vanishing into the darkness.
Yun Yao stared at the spot where the Fairy had disappeared, filled with doubt. She sensed that the Fairy was hiding something. However, the priority remained investigating the Ancestor of the Netherworld. She took a deep breath and exited the cave. Outside, the night had deepened, and the cold wind howled like the low growl of a beast, signaling that greater dangers were approaching.
"Ancestor of the Netherworld," she whispered to the pitch-black sky, "I will surely find your weakness."
"Are you certain?" a voice sounded from behind her.
The night remained heavy, and the cold wind wailed. Yun Yao stood at the cave mouth, a swirl of complex emotions in her heart. She glanced back at Fairy Snow Fox, feeling a flicker of gratitude. Although the Fairy’s words had been guarded, the depth of emotion in her eyes told Yun Yao she was no enemy.
"Fairy Snow Fox," Yun Yao said softly, "I know you have your concerns, but this matter is of great importance. I cannot give up. If you are willing, I hope you can help me."
The Fairy frowned, remaining silent for a moment. Her eyes seemed to glow in the dim cave, as if peering into the soul. Finally, she sighed and gave a slow nod. "Very well. I can help you, but you must be careful. Greater secrets hide behind these evil forces."
Yun Yao felt a warmth in her heart and nodded gratefully. The Fairy reached into her sleeve and produced a scroll covered in ancient runes. "These are the clues I have gathered regarding the Ancestor of the Netherworld. I hope they prove useful."
Yun Yao took the scroll and read it carefully. It detailed the movements of the Ancestor and several hidden ritual sites. She looked up, her eyes gleaming with resolve. "Thank you, Fairy Snow Fox."
The Fairy smiled faintly. Yun Yao nodded and stepped out of the cave. The night wind outside was even fiercer, as if whispering of the impending peril. Taking a deep breath, she followed the clues on the scroll to a hidden valley.
Deep in the valley, trees towered, blocking out the sky. Yun Yao moved with caution until she suddenly sensed a powerful surge of energy ahead. It acted like an invisible barrier, preventing her from drawing near. She furrowed her brow, on high alert. The energy was ancient and formidable—clearly a barrier set by the Ancestor of the Netherworld.
Yun Yao steadied herself, preparing to break through. Just as she gathered her spiritual power for a strike, she heard a gentle, firm voice in her ear.
"Be careful." Jun Mohan’s voice was like a lamp in the dark, warm and steady.
Yun Yao turned to see him standing not far away, his eyes filled with concern. A warmth bloomed in her heart. She nodded, turned back, and faced the barrier once more. She inhaled deeply, pooling all her spiritual strength for a single, decisive blow.
At that exact moment, the powerful energy suddenly vanished, as if dissolved into the night.
