Chapter 35: Strange Turns and Reversed Paths Resolve New Doubts
Yun Yao stared at the secret treasure in her hands. Its once smooth and lustrous surface was now covered in fine, web-like cracks, pulsating with an eerie crimson glow.
A sense of foreboding washed over her, and she gripped the object tightly. The cave was deathly silent, save for the sound of her own ragged breathing. An inexplicable pressure hung in the air, leaving her feeling suffocated.
Jun Mohan noticed the change in the treasure as well. His brows furrowed, and a flicker of concern darkened his deep eyes. He reached out to touch it, but Yun Yao stopped him.
"Don't touch it yet!" Her voice trembled. She did not know what this sudden transformation signified, but instinct told her it was dangerous.
Jun Mohan’s hand paused in mid-air, his eyes filled with questions. In the past, whenever they encountered such situations, Yun Yao would always actively seek a solution, but this time, she was uncharacteristically cautious.
Taking a deep breath, Yun Yao forced herself to stay calm. She gently placed the treasure on the ground and stepped back, her gaze fixed upon it as if watching a slumbering beast. The atmosphere in the cave grew more bizarre, the tension gradually replaced by confusion. Jun Mohan remained silent, standing quietly by her side to offer his wordless support. He knew that Yun Yao must have her own reasons.
The two watched the treasure in silence, the oppressive stillness suggesting that something was about to break through the surface. Suddenly, Yun Yao’s expression shifted. She whipped her head toward the entrance and whispered, "Someone is coming..."
A rustling sound at the cave entrance shattered the silence. Jun Mohan immediately drew his sword, keeping a vigilant watch. A dark shadow flickered past, moving with astonishing speed. Before they could react, a violent explosion erupted at the entrance, sending stone fragments flying and thick dust billowing into the air.
"Cough, cough..." Yun Yao choked, dust stinging her eyes and obscuring her vision. Her heart hammered against her ribs, and a wave of terror surged within her.
"Yingsha!" Jun Mohan’s voice was low and brimming with fury. He had instantly recognized the intruder as a member of the mysterious assassin organization they had previously defeated.
Yingsha reappeared at the entrance, a cold, sinister smile playing on his lips. "Didn't expect to see me back, did you?" His voice was raspy and grating, like the cry of a night owl, chilling to the bone.
"You dare show your face again!" Jun Mohan roared, lunging forward with his blade. However, Yingsha dodged the strike with agile grace and vanished into the shadows of the entrance once more.
"Damn it!" Jun Mohan cursed under his breath. He realized that Yingsha had come prepared. They were trapped inside the cave, and the entrance had been rigged with a snare.
As time ticked by, the air in the cave grew stiflingly hot, making it difficult for Yun Yao to breathe. She scanned the surroundings anxiously, hoping to find a way out, but found only solid stone walls—there was no escape.
Sensing her unease, Jun Mohan walked over and patted her shoulder gently. "Don't worry, we will find a way out." He took some rations and water from his robes and handed them to her. "Eat something first."
Yun Yao accepted the provisions, a warmth spreading through her heart. Even in the midst of their plight, Jun Mohan’s thoughtfulness provided her with comfort. They sat together in the cave, sharing a quiet meal, the warmth of their companionship standing in stark contrast to the danger lurking outside.
Suddenly, a thought struck Yun Yao. Her eyes lit up—she remembered that the little fox might know the reason for the treasure’s transformation. She hurried to a corner where a golden glow flickered; it was the little fox.
The creature seemed to sense her intent, its golden eyes shimmering with intelligence as it let out a soft meow in response to her call.
"Little fox, can you hear me? Can you tell me why the treasure has changed like this?" Yun Yao asked softly, her tone laced with anticipation.
The fox’s gaze turned sharp. It stood up, used its tiny paw to scratch several strange symbols into the dirt, then pointed at the treasure, and finally toward the depths of the cave. Yun Yao studied the symbols carefully. Though she could not decipher their meaning, a rush of excitement stirred within her.
She looked up at Jun Mohan, her eyes shining with hope. "Mohan, I think the fox knows something. It gave me a clue!"
Jun Mohan nodded, his voice steady. "Good. Let's follow its lead. The enemies outside won't wait much longer."
Indeed, the sound of chaotic footsteps and murmurs reached them from the entrance. Yingsha, Elder Lingfeng, and the others had returned. Their eyes burned with greed and cruelty; they were clearly hoping to seize the opportunity to strike again.
Jun Mohan and Yun Yao were ready. They had already utilized the cave's terrain to set multiple traps.
"You fools, you actually dare to return!" Jun Mohan’s voice was cold and sharp.
At his signal, the stones at the entrance suddenly collapsed. Caught off guard, Yingsha and his men were struck down. Sharp stone spikes erupted from all directions, piercing the enemies and filling the air with their screams. The little fox chirped happily from the side, as if cheering for their victory.
Jun Mohan lunged forward, thrusting his sword at Yingsha, who failed to dodge and slammed heavily against the stone wall with a dull thud. Seeing this, Elder Lingfeng frantically ordered his disciples to retreat, but it was too late. Jun Mohan and Yun Yao had woven a trap from which there was no escape. The enemies were in disarray, and the falling rocks only deepened their panic.
After the battle, Yun Yao picked up the treasure, which had yet to return to its original state. Her expression turned solemn. Based on the fox’s hints, she realized the secret of the treasure seemed linked to an ancient legend of the Immortal Sect. Her brows furrowed, as if contemplating something of great importance.
"Mohan, the truth behind this treasure may be far more complex than we imagined," Yun Yao said, her voice heavy with gravity.
Jun Mohan took her hand firmly. "No matter how many unknowns lie ahead, we will face them together."
Yun Yao nodded. She took a deep breath, carefully stowed the treasure away, and made a silent resolve to delve into the ancient legend. The two exchanged a resolute smile and took their next step forward.
