Chapter 24: A New Journey Begins, Deepening Affection
Yunyao stood by the edge of the Immortal Sect’s training grounds, the afternoon sun casting a warm, gentle glow upon her. On the field, her fellow disciples were drenched in sweat, their blades clashing in a flurry of light as shouts and calls echoed through the air.
Though the scene before her was vibrant and bustling, Yunyao’s heart remained tranquil as she contemplated her future path. The turmoil of the recent banquet had subsided; Song Qing’s conspiracy had been exposed, and not only had she preserved Chef Wang’s reputation, but her own capabilities had finally been recognized. The elders had showered her with praise, even breaking tradition to bestow upon her a precious manual of immortal arts.
Yunyao traced the surface of the manual in her hands; it was smooth and delicate, shimmering with a faint, pale golden luster. As she opened it, an ancient aura rushed forth. The immortal techniques inscribed within were profound and mysterious, filling her with anticipation for her future cultivation.
Her fellow disciples cast envious glances her way, whispering among themselves, "As expected of Senior Sister Yunyao, she truly is incredible!" "Indeed, she is not only brilliant but also deeply favored by the elders." These accolades did not make Yunyao lose her composure; she understood well that the path of the Immortal Sect was long and arduous, and this success was but a small beginning. More challenges lay ahead, and she needed to continuously strengthen herself to secure her footing in this competitive world.
Watching her energetic peers on the training ground, Yunyao felt both longing for the future and anxiety toward the unknown. She knew that the internal struggles of the Immortal Sect were far more complex than they appeared, and this recent incident was merely the tip of the iceberg. She had to remain cautious to protect both herself and those around her.
Just then, a familiar voice sounded by her ear: "Yao'er, let me take you somewhere." Yunyao turned to see Jun Mohan standing behind her, his gaze as gentle as water.
Jun Mohan took her hand and led her along winding paths to a secluded valley behind the sect. Within the valley, clear springs flowed, birds sang, and flowers bloomed in a breathtaking display. An ancient peach tree stood in the center, its pink petals falling like rain to blanket the ground, the air filled with the faint, sweet scent of peach blossoms.
"This is the Peach Blossom Haven, where the succession of Sect Masters has cultivated for generations," Jun Mohan’s voice was low and resonant, echoing through the valley. "Legend has it that cultivating here yields twice the result with half the effort, and one can better grasp the fundamental truths of heaven and earth."
Yunyao leaned against Jun Mohan, quietly listening as he recounted the history and legends of the sect. Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, bathing them in warmth.
As a breeze swept through, a peach petal drifted onto Yunyao’s hair. Jun Mohan gently brushed it away, and as Yunyao felt the warmth of his palm, a sweet, glowing current surged through her heart, dispelling all gloom like the sunlight upon her skin.
Back in her quarters, Yunyao could hardly wait to begin practicing the techniques from the elder's manual. She sat cross-legged, took a deep breath, and immersed her mind in the text. The characters seemed to come alive, dancing in her mind as complex symbols gradually clarified. With her exceptional aptitude, Yunyao quickly grasped the essence of the manual, and the immortal energy within her stirred, coalescing into a powerful force.
The surrounding disciples were stunned by her speed; they had never seen anyone master a new immortal technique so rapidly. "Senior Sister Yunyao is truly gifted!" "Indeed, it seems her future achievements will be limitless!" The exclamations continued, and as Yunyao felt their envious eyes upon her, her heart filled with confidence. She knew her standing within the sect had become even more secure.
After finishing her practice, Yunyao stepped out of her room and stretched, feeling refreshed and invigorated. Jun Mohan approached with a gentle smile on his face. "Yao'er, your speed of cultivation is truly astonishing," he said, a hint of pride in his voice.
Yunyao smiled brightly. "It is all thanks to you for taking me to the Peach Blossom Haven; the spiritual energy there is indeed abundant." They exchanged a smile, their mutual understanding unspoken.
In the distance, two disciples were walking toward them. One remarked, "See? I told you the two of them..." As they drew closer, one lowered his voice, saying, "Look, didn't I say their relationship was unusual? Ever since the last banquet, Senior Brother Jun has been looking after Senior Sister Yunyao with extra care." The other chimed in, "Indeed. They are together all day, inseparable. But with Senior Sister Yunyao being so outstanding, it is no wonder Senior Brother Jun would be moved."
Every word reached Yunyao’s ears. The relaxed smile on her face gradually faded, replaced by a touch of solemnity. She knew that among the disciples, romantic matters were always a sensitive topic. Although she had feelings for Jun Mohan, being discussed so openly made her feel uneasy. She glanced furtively at him and found that he did not seem to have heard the gossip, still looking at her with his usual gentle gaze. A wave of restlessness surged in her heart; she did not know how to handle such complex emotions.
On one hand, she longed to be with Jun Mohan; on the other, she worried that this relationship would affect her reputation in the sect or even become an obstacle on her path of cultivation.
Jun Mohan sensed the shift in her mood and asked with concern, "Yao'er, what is wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Yunyao forced a faint smile. "It is nothing, just a bit tired."
Jun Mohan did not press further, simply taking her hand gently to offer silent support. Just then, a commotion broke out in the distance as a group of disciples gathered to whisper. Yunyao and Jun Mohan walked over out of curiosity, only to hear someone say, "I heard that Senior Sister Yunyao and Senior Brother Jun..." The rest of the sentence was drowned out by the noise of the crowd, but Yunyao had already guessed what they were saying.
Jun Mohan’s expression darkened instantly. He turned abruptly, his gaze sweeping over the crowd like a torch. The disciples who had been whispering fell deathly silent, not daring to make another sound.
Jun Mohan took a deep breath and spoke in a steady, firm voice: "Yunyao and I are in love. This is not a matter for others to judge. I hope that from this day forward, I will not hear any more idle gossip." His words rang out clearly, echoing in the air. The surrounding people were cowed by his intensity, lowering their heads, not daring to meet his gaze.
Yunyao’s heart was filled with emotion. As she looked at Jun Mohan, he gently pulled her into his embrace and whispered in her ear, "Yao'er, do not worry. I will always be by your side." Yunyao held him tightly, feeling his warm embrace, and the unease in her heart slowly dissipated.
Standing on the highest training platform of the sect, Yunyao faced the rising sun and took a deep, refreshing breath. The rolling mountains in the distance were shrouded in mist, appearing like a fairyland. She turned back and saw Jun Mohan standing behind her with a gentle smile. They looked at each other and smiled; everything was understood without a word.
"Yao'er," Jun Mohan suddenly began, "tonight's banquet..."
