Chapter 48: The Corpse Tide Approaches!

The gunfire in my hands gradually weakened. The magazine was empty, and a wisp of white smoke curled from the muzzle. I shouted anxiously, “Ammunition! Does anyone have ammunition?”
At that moment, my voice was hoarse yet resolute. I sounded nothing like a newcomer taking part in his first battle. Instead, I seemed more like a seasoned veteran who had fought for years on this apocalyptic battlefield.
A soldier carrying supplies quickly hauled over a black metal crate. When he opened it, it was packed with bullets and magazines. I snatched up a magazine, loaded it, and continued firing.
Yet the number of zombies below showed no sign of diminishing. They surged forward endlessly like a relentless tide, filling everyone with despair. But I did not retreat. All that sustained me was the gun in my hands and the unquenchable conviction in my heart.
Beside me, the machine-gunner clung tightly to the trigger. His hands trembled from the recoil, and the relentless barrage had twisted his features, but there was not the slightest hint of negligence or fear in his eyes.
Suddenly, a dark shape shot up from beneath the wall. It was a long, wet, enormous tongue. Like a living creature, it wrapped around the machine-gunner with astonishing speed and violently dragged him from his position.
“What the hell is that?!”
The scene unfolded before me like a nightmare. Shock seized me, and my heart contracted violently. The hand gripping my rifle began to tremble involuntarily.
I drew a deep breath and forced myself to calm down. Strapping my rifle tightly across my back, I let a look of determination flash through my eyes. Then I charged toward the vacant machine-gun position. Without the slightest hesitation, I took the place of the unfortunate gunner.
Clasping both hands around the grips, I pressed the trigger. The twenty-millimeter machine gun erupted with astonishing firepower. Beneath the wall, the mass of zombies was instantly shredded by the dense storm of bullets, chunks of flesh flying in every direction.
I stared at the zombies blasted full of holes, the corners of my mouth curling into a cold smile—a smile of indifference toward death and destruction.
“It’s a D2-class mutant Ravager! Everyone, put on your headsets!”
A sharp and forceful voice came from somewhere, breaking through the din of battle.
The instant the words ended, thunderous roars swept up from beneath the wall. They battered my eardrums and made my vision swim.
Fortunately, I was one of the zombies myself. The attack did not affect me greatly; I possessed a certain resistance to sonic assaults and suffered little harm.

However, when I looked back, I saw that several soldiers nearby had only just begun following the order to put on their headsets. They were already too late.
Blood burst from both their ears. Their bodies collapsed one after another, as though struck by an invisible force.
My heart tightened. I quickly scanned the area below and finally found the source of the roar: a mutant zombie that looked no different from an ordinary D-class zombie, yet possessed a roar far beyond anything a normal D-class zombie could produce.
“So this is a D2 mutant zombie? A sonic attack?”
I muttered to myself, but I had already made my decision.
I rapidly adjusted the machine gun, aimed at the roaring D2 Ravager, and pressed the trigger. Bullets poured out like a torrential downpour. The overwhelming firepower instantly pierced its hide, and the deafening roar abruptly ceased.
“Well done!”
Chief Feng’s familiar, steady voice came from the distance. From the corner of my eye, I saw him standing nearby.
But the gunfire was too loud, so I had to shout at the top of my lungs. “Chief Feng, we can’t keep fighting like this! Do we have a more powerful weapon, or some kind of backup plan?”
My words had barely left my mouth, and before Chief Feng could answer, a thick tongue shot toward me like lightning.
I abandoned the machine gun and instinctively leaped backward. But the long tongue seemed to possess a will of its own and swept straight through the weapon, snapping it in half.
I sucked in a sharp breath, an unprecedented sense of danger surging through me.
The tongue did not stop. It continued hurtling toward me. I turned and tried to run, but the zombie’s tongue was far too fast. In an instant, it wrapped around my ankle. A tremendous force began dragging me backward. I struggled desperately, but it was useless.
At that critical moment, I suddenly drew the rifle from my back and fired frantically at the tongue. Apparently sensing the pain, it began whipping violently from side to side.
I was tossed back and forth, yet I held on to the rifle with all my strength. When the magazine was nearly empty, the tongue finally gave in to the agony and snapped back with a hiss.
Still shaken, I gasped for breath, my heart pounding like a drum.

But how could the zombies give us even a moment to breathe? Those horrifying half-human, half-crawling creatures had already surged onto the wall like a tidal wave.
They were astonishingly fast and possessed strength beyond imagination. With the little firepower we had left, we were utterly incapable of resisting their overwhelming assault.
I watched helplessly as countless soldiers were torn apart by the cold claws of the zombies surging over the wall. Their enormous mouths, lined with long fangs, were like the scythes of the Grim Reaper. With every bite, soldiers were left mangled, blood spraying everywhere. The scene was unimaginably gruesome.
A sense of helplessness welled up inside me. Then, absurdly, I thought how wonderful it would be if I could control these zombies with mental power.
I closed my eyes, concentrated, and tried to control them with my mind. But after a brief attempt, I opened my eyes in resignation. As expected, it was useless.
I sighed, then raised my gun and fired desperately at the zombies charging up the wall. Gradually, the gunshots grew sparse. I looked down and saw that I had run out of ammunition.
My heart clenched, and I was just about to change magazines when a dark shape appeared behind me. It was one of the half-human, half-crawling zombies. It swung its razor-sharp claws at me with tremendous force.
I had no time to dodge. The blow sent me flying, and a piercing pain erupted in my back, as though countless blades were tearing through my flesh.
I crashed heavily onto the ground, landing beside Chief Feng. With great difficulty, I struggled to my feet, feeling utterly drained, my vision blurred.
In a daze, I noticed that the machine gun beside Chief Feng stood unattended. At some point, its gunner had fallen into a pool of blood, leaving the weapon lying silently on the ground.
My heart tightened. I knew the situation had reached an unprecedented crisis. Gritting my teeth and enduring the agony wracking my body, I prepared to throw myself back into the fight.
The assault rifle’s firepower seemed pitifully weak against these half-human, half-crawling zombies. Their bodies appeared impervious to ordinary bullets. Only the tremendous firepower of the machine gun could inflict lethal damage on them.
Panting heavily, I struggled up from the ground. My legs felt as heavy as lead, yet I staggered toward the machine gun...
