Chapter 51: Unsafe
Having slept too much during the day, Lin Ting found it somewhat difficult to fall asleep as night descended.
Shang Moting had business to attend to and had left right after dinner. Left alone in the hospital ward and utterly unable to sleep, Lin Ting sent a message in her group chat, asking if anyone had time to keep her company and chat.
Only the person in charge of the Interstellar Hotel here in Beijing replied in the chat.
Lying in bed with her eyes closed, Lin Ting started a phone call with her.
The person in charge in Beijing was named Meng Huaizhu. After Lin Ting took over the Interstellar Hotel, she had spent a tremendous amount of money to poach her back from abroad.
She was an exceptionally brilliant individual.
She had entered university at the age of thirteen, and at twenty-eight, her life was more extraordinary than what some people achieved in a lifetime.
She possessed both high intelligence and high emotional intelligence.
A few months ago, in Lin Ting's eyes, Meng Huaizhu was a flawlessly perfect existence.
Until... Meng Huaizhu started quarreling with her boyfriend.
Lin Ting suddenly discovered that she was utterly love-struck.
Whenever Meng Huaizhu faced her boyfriend, Lin Ting found that her intellect plummeted to the lowest depths.
She could not comprehend why things had turned out this way.
Right now, as Lin Ting listened on the phone, she was once again hearing Meng Huaizhu denounce that man.
"We are truly done this time. If I ever turn back! If I ever make up with him again! I'll change my last name to yours!"
"You better mean what you say," Lin Ting replied. "Sister Meng, that man is genuinely not worth your investing so much in him. He is indeed a match in social standing, and he used to treat you well in the past. But now his true nature is slowly revealing itself. Lazy, overly attached to his mother, chauvinistic—his flaws are so numerous I can't even list them all. You cannot spend the rest of your life living with a man like that."
"What you're saying is right. I shouldn't just keep my eyes fixed on him; what kind of creature is he anyway?" Meng Huaizhu said. "I refuse to let him break my heart ever again. I've truly made up my mind this time."
Hearing of this sudden awakening, Lin Ting nodded with her eyes closed, feeling quite novel about it, when the door to her ward was suddenly struck.
The commotion was quite loud.
Lin Ting opened her eyes, looked toward the door, and said to Meng Huaizhu, "Sister Meng, something urgent has come up on my end, so I'll stop talking to you for now."
She hung up the phone, got out of bed, and walked toward the door.
As soon as she opened it, the person who had been leaning against the door outside simply collapsed flat onto the ground.
It was one of the bodyguards Shang Moting had left behind to protect her.
Lin Ting squatted down and touched the side of his neck.
He was merely knocked out.
Stepping outside, she found that the other five bodyguards in the corridor had all collapsed as well.
The corridor was silent, bathed in a cold, gray incandescent light.
Apart from the people lying on the floor and Lin Ting herself, there was nothing else.
Even the nurse on duty had vanished.
It was too quiet, abnormally quiet.
Moreover, these people had suddenly collapsed, yet she hadn't heard the slightest sound.
Even though she had been on the phone, and even though the room had excellent soundproofing,
it was impossible not to hear a single sound.
And... Lin Ting looked around her.
There were no signs of a struggle.
The intruder's combat skills must have been extraordinary to take down all these people at lightning speed.
Lin Ting squatted down again to inspect the fallen men.
Some had been struck on the back of the neck to render them unconscious, while others... had pinpricks on their necks, indicating they had been injected with drugs.
Just as she was pondering this,
the airflow behind her changed abruptly.
Lin Ting rose and dodged to the side.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a man wearing a white coat and a surgical mask, holding a syringe, as if intending to inject her.
Seeing that Lin Ting had evaded his attack, he paused in surprise before lunging at her again.
As they exchanged blows, Lin Ting immediately realized that this opponent was formidable.
She wouldn't be able to finish him off quickly.
Lin Ting wrenched his wrist, causing the syringe in his hand to drop to the floor.
Lin Ting immediately kicked it far away.
However, the man pulled another one out from the pocket of his white coat.
Lin Ting: "............"
With a flick of her wrist, Lin Ting threw out her butterfly knife and closed in on him again. A few minutes later, she sliced open his pocket with the blade and retrieved the syringes from both of his pockets.
The price she paid was having her shoulders pinned down by him.
She was forced to bend over at the waist, and at the same time, she heard the sound of the elevator doors opening.
Fearing that it was the intruder's accomplice,
Lin Ting exerted reverse force, allowing him to dislocate her arm before executing a shoulder throw on him.
When Shang Moting and Fang Cheng hurried over, they arrived just in time to witness Lin Ting's shoulder throw.
The two men rushed forward immediately.
The intruder was slammed onto the ground. Without the slightest hesitation, Lin Ting followed up with a kick, driving her butterfly knife straight into his shoulder.
Nevertheless, the man quickly scrambled back up.
Lin Ting also stepped back quickly, pulling and tugging to reposition her dislocated arm, while casting a glance behind her.
Upon seeing that it was Shang Moting and Fang Cheng, the stern and fierce look in her eyes softened slightly.
Fang Cheng stepped forward to engage the man in combat.
Shang Moting gently supported her dislocated arm.
The fierce expression vanished from Lin Ting's face, replaced once more by her usual gentle and lively demeanor, though her forehead was beaded with a light sweat. "It's fine, it's already popped back into place."
Shang Moting scanned her body. "Did you get hurt anywhere else?"
Lin Ting shook her head. "Mere mortals..."
She looked toward Fang Cheng and the man.
This man was indeed formidable; even after taking a hit, he was still able to tangle with Fang Cheng for so long.
Her hands itching for a fight, Lin Ting wanted to step forward again.
She loved crossing swords with experts.
Sensing her intention, Shang Moting grasped her hand and told her to stay put.
He stepped forward.
No matter how skilled a man was, his stamina would eventually run out—especially when facing both Shang Moting and Fang Cheng simultaneously.
Before long, the man was slammed hard against the wall by Shang Moting.
Lin Ting picked up one of the syringes, walked right up, stabbed it into his neck, and pushed the plunger down.
The man instantly lost consciousness.
The moment Shang Moting released his grip, the intruder collapsed heavily onto the floor.
Lin Ting blinked in surprise. "The drug works this fast?"
Shang Moting looked down at her.
Lin Ting explained, "They're all from his own stash. Several of your men were also taken down by this exact same drug."
Fang Cheng cuffed the man's hands together and made a phone call to have someone come and clean up the scene.
Shang Moting took Lin Ting down to the orthopedic department on the lower floor to have her arm checked.
Once it was reset, there were no further issues.
However, Lin Ting no longer wished to stay in the hospital.
The hospital no longer felt safe under these circumstances.
Consequently, Shang Moting drove her back to his residence.
Halfway there, Lin Ting caught sight of a convenience store and asked Shang Moting to pull over.
"What is it?" Shang Moting asked.
Lin Ting got out of the car, saying, "Buying something."
Shang Moting followed her out of the car and into the convenience store.
He then followed her all the way to the daily necessities aisle.
With a sweeping gaze, Lin Ting swiftly grabbed several packs of sanitary pads, and when paying the cashier, she also borrowed the restroom key from the store owner.
Shang Moting carried her purchases and waited for her outside the convenience store entrance.
Suddenly, he recalled the first time she had ever experienced this, curled up in a ball in the corner of the bed, crying while holding a grudge in sullen silence.
Shang Moting couldn't help but chuckle softly.
When Lin Ting emerged from the convenience store, Shang Moting looked at her for a moment and noticed her complexion was rather poor. "Hurting?"
"Not hurting." Lin Ting tried to deceive herself.
Straightening her back, she marched resolutely toward the car.
Shang Moting walked alongside her, closely observing her expression.
Inwardly, Lin Ting was repenting and praying frantically.
Stop hurting, please stop hurting.
I won't eat ice cream next time.
I beg you, stop hurting.
I really didn't forget about you on purpose.
Please stop hurting, stop hurting......
