Chapter 15: Encountering Survivors and Purchasing Mutton
Rem walked over to the food storage box, took out a frying pan, some pork, and eggs, and placed them over the campfire to heat.
As the aroma of the food gradually spread, Yang Keli was awakened by the scent. She sat up groggily, rubbed her eyes, and seeing everyone busy at work, felt a bit embarrassed.
“Good morning, Chen Fan,” she said softly.
Chen Fan smiled in response, “Good morning, Keli. We have a lot to do today.”
Soon, everyone gathered around the campfire, enjoying a simple yet comforting breakfast.
After breakfast, Chen Fan crafted four shields and distributed them to the group. With their gear packed, they stepped out of the wooden cabin, greeted by the morning sun, ready to embark on a new day’s journey.
After all, a man who supports his family must work even harder.
[Weather: Clear, Temperature: 10~18°C]
[Day Length: 10 hours]
[Reminder: 4 days until the arrival of the harsh winter...]
Leaving the cabin, Chen Fan led Yang Keli toward a small hill ahead. They intended to check the vast plain for newly spawned lambs and supply crates.
Rem and Ram, the two sisters, were assigned by Chen Fan to the opposite side to search for supply crates and other resources.
After a while, Chen Fan spotted a gray sheep and several white ones not far away.
“Sheep,” Chen Fan said with delight, turning to Yang Keli. “Let’s attack together. Don’t let them escape.”
“Got it!”
With that, the two drew their iron swords and quietly approached.
At this moment, the sheep were unaware of their presence, leisurely grazing with heads down.
Seizing the right moment, Chen Fan and Yang Keli exchanged glances, raised their iron swords, and charged, striking the sheep simultaneously.
In an instant, the gray sheep’s health bar was depleted, yielding two pieces of mutton, a bundle of wool, and some experience points.
The other white sheep, startled by the noise, lifted their heads momentarily before reacting.
Chen Fan immediately lunged at one, slashing it. The wounded sheep bleated in pain and instinctively fled in another direction.
Chen Fan pursued swiftly and delivered the finishing blow.
Thus, the two managed to slay three sheep in total, though the other two escaped.
Sheep in this world differ from those in “Minecraft.” They flee rapidly upon sensing danger, unlike the game’s sheep that stand foolishly still, awaiting slaughter.
“Let’s keep chasing,” Chen Fan said. “We need 30 wool to make our warm tents.”
After some pursuit, the sheep vanished from sight.
Chen Fan and Yang Keli reluctantly took out food and water to replenish their hunger and thirst bars, placing the six freshly obtained mutton pieces into the furnace to roast.
Soon, a rich aroma of grilled meat wafted from the furnace.
Meanwhile, Rem and Ram were searching through a dense forest for food and supply crates.
At that moment, Ram spotted a supply crate hidden behind a tree. She hurried over and opened it to find four loaves of bread and a women’s down jacket.
Delighted, Ram stored the items in her inventory and resumed the search.
Not far away, Rem was mining an open-air coal deposit. Just as she was about to leave, a low growl echoed nearby.
Rem looked up to see a massive brown bear emerging from the forest. It stared greedily at her, standing upright, its huge frame nearly two to three meters tall.
Startled but undeterred, Rem quickly readied herself for battle.
At the same time, Ram heard the noise and rushed over, drawing her iron sword without hesitation upon seeing the enormous bear.
The two exchanged a determined look and charged with their swords raised.
Not far from Chen Fan, five people—a man, a woman, three men, and a baby—were walking toward him.
“What’s that smell? It’s so fragrant!”
“That smells like grilled meat.”
“Oh my gosh, I’m so tired of eating rotten meat. I just want some real meat.”
“The aroma seems to be coming from that direction. Should we go check it out?”
Exchanging glances, they nodded and headed toward Chen Fan.
After a few steps, they saw Chen Fan and Yang Keli standing by the furnace, source of the enticing scent.
“Who are those two? They actually have meat?”
Their mouths watered as they stared at Chen Fan’s cooked mutton, wishing it were theirs.
One bespectacled young man even took a screenshot and posted in the world chat, “Guys, I just saw someone grilling meat. Can you believe it?”
Upon hearing this, the world chat instantly buzzed with activity.
“Grilled meat? Impossible. I’ve tried everything and still can’t make a fire. I’ve been eating raw meat and almost died!”
“I’m losing it. Besides supply crates, chopping trees has a chance to drop apples. Any other way to get food?”
“Shouldn’t you focus on the main point? How did he manage to start a fire? I’ve been trying non-stop with no luck.”
“I saw something like that in a small village. It’s called a furnace.”
“No way he stole it. How dare he? When I entered the village, I was surrounded by people and even an iron-clad guy.”
The group exchanged glances, deciding maybe they could greet Chen Fan and perhaps trade for some meat. They then approached him.
Chen Fan took the cooked mutton out of the furnace.
The group’s eyes watered at the tantalizing aroma, swallowing hard.
Since arriving in this world, the best food they’d had were apples. Often forced to eat rotten meat, their hunger bars were down to five points.
“Hey, brother, can we trade?” one asked.
“Yes, we can offer logs in exchange. Is that okay?”
Chen Fan frowned at the sudden appearance of these people and tucked the meat back into his inventory.
“Sorry, no.”
What a joke. With four mouths to feed at home, there was no way he’d trade with strangers.
Realizing their abruptness, the group’s demeanor shifted. Food was so scarce that trading lightly would be foolish.
After securing the food, Chen Fan packed up the workbench and furnace, preparing to leave with Yang Keli.
Seeing this, the group hurried to block their path.
Chen Fan’s brow furrowed, a faint glint of menace in his eyes. “What do you mean by this?”
Noticing his anger, one young man quickly raised his hands.
“Hey, calm down. We’re not here to steal. We just want to know how you got the raw meat and those items.”
“Yeah, we’re all from Blue Star. No need for hostility.”
“Right, brother. Maybe we can help each other in the future.”
Though their words seemed sincere, Chen Fan remained stern.
His gaze briefly rested on the baby in the woman’s arms. After a moment’s thought, he slowly spoke:
“Meat comes from killing animals. As for the furnace, you need to craft it at a workbench using cobblestones—arranged in a complete ring with the center left empty.”
