Chapter 35: Fooling You, You Enchanting Spirit
Ke Xianbai said he was going back to Hong Kong City for a few days, but in reality, Pei Baoyuan had not seen him for nearly a month.
She would occasionally send him videos and photos of Coconut. Most of the time, Ke Xianbai would reply quickly, but recently, Pei Baoyuan had sent messages for several days in a row without receiving a single word in return.
Pei Baoyuan stroked Coconut, who was lying at her feet. "Coconut, your brother doesn't want you anymore. He hasn't replied to any messages for so long."
"Awoo, awoo..."
Coconut lay on the ground, letting out a few lazy barks, showing absolutely no concern for his owner who had been away for nearly a month.
Pei Baoyuan looked at the scrolling comments.
The comments were full of discussions about how Song Yiren had recently redeemed her reputation through a variety show, and how affectionate Song Yiren and Huo Yanzhi had been lately. There was absolutely no news about Ke Xianbai.
She sighed helplessly.
From the perspective of the comments, Song Yiren and Huo Yanzhi were the protagonists, while she and Ke Xianbai were, at best, cannon fodder in their love story. It was no wonder the comments knew so little about them.
Pei Baoyuan sat for a while, and seeing that the time was right, she tidied up and prepared to go celebrate Meng Qing’s birthday.
The main branch of the Meng family was in Mountain City, but a side branch had been rooted in the Imperial Capital for years. Thus, Meng Qing was not technically a local of the Imperial Capital; she had grown up in Mountain City and did not have many friends in the capital. As her future sister-in-law, Pei Baoyuan was one of the few.
The birthday party was held at a club, and Meng Qing had invited only her closest friends and family.
Pei Baoyuan had prepared a pair of jade earrings for Meng Qing, which she and Mrs. Song Xuanling had bought at an auction a while back. Meng Qing had fair skin and a gentle, elegant temperament, and the jade jewelry suited her perfectly.
What surprised Pei Baoyuan was that her brother, Pei Zongnian—a man who had been cold and indifferent for as long as she could remember—actually knelt on one knee to propose with a ring at Meng Qing’s birthday party!
The way Pei Zongnian spoke his sweet nothings while kneeling was as serious and solemn as ever. Pei Baoyuan couldn't help but record it on her phone and then sent it to their parents.
The atmosphere in the private room was delightful, and everyone was congratulating the new couple. Pei Baoyuan offered a few words of congratulations before quietly slipping out.
The doors blocked off the liveliness inside, and Pei Baoyuan suddenly felt a sense of loneliness.
If only Coconut were here.
Suddenly—
Pei Baoyuan’s wrist was grabbed by a strong, powerful arm. Before she could steady herself, in a matter of seconds, she was pulled into a private room by that hand.
It was an empty room in the club.
In the dim environment, just as Pei Baoyuan was about to call for help, a hand covered her mouth, and a familiar scent wafted into her nose.
"Shh."
"Ke Xianbai?" Pei Baoyuan calmed down.
The hand gripping Pei Baoyuan loosened its grip, and she reached out to find the wall switch.
The sudden light was blinding for a moment. Pei Baoyuan blinked, adjusting her eyes to see the situation in the room.
Ke Xianbai was lying back on the sofa, his eyes slightly raised, looking at Pei Baoyuan by the door.
For his alarming behavior of appearing out of nowhere, Pei Baoyuan kicked him.
The force was not great, but Ke Xianbai coughed for a long time.
Pei Baoyuan said, "I only gave you a light kick, why are you acting like you're dying?"
Ke Xianbai replied, "..."
He kept his legs crossed, still lying on the sofa.
"It really hurts."
"Stop lying."
"It's true, I'm lying to you, you... charming demon."
Ke Xianbai suddenly sat up and leaned in very close. Pei Baoyuan was startled by his sudden movement and stepped back, pressing against the door.
"You're the charming demon; I'm obviously a little fairy that everyone loves."
Pei Baoyuan lowered her eyes. She felt as though she were pinned against the door by Ke Xianbai, the two of them incredibly close.
Their breaths mingled, and an ambiguous atmosphere grew.
"What... what are you doing?"
"What do you think?"
Ke Xianbai smiled and leaned in even closer.
Now there was only half an inch of distance left; their lips were about to touch.
Pei Baoyuan could even feel the heat from Ke Xianbai’s lips. In a panic, she reached out and pushed him.
"You're being a hooligan!"
"Hiss..."
Ke Xianbai retreated two steps. "How come I never noticed you were this strong before?"
Pei Baoyuan choked, retorting, "And I never noticed before that you loved to act like a hooligan!"
Ke Xianbai let out a low laugh, then swayed and fell backward.
As Pei Baoyuan watched in shock and panic, Ke Xianbai managed to reach out and prop himself up against the wall.
Only then did Pei Baoyuan notice that Ke Xianbai’s lips were pale...
