Chapter 2: An Accident Occurs
Page 1/3
The barrage of comments flooding Pei Baoyuan’s view was almost overwhelming.
“Can someone tell me why the supporting female lead suddenly returned to the country?”
“Why did Ke Xianbo suddenly show up at the male lead’s birthday party? I don’t remember the original story going like this. Could this be a sign of a sloppy ending?”
“The female lead has the protagonist’s aura, so what’s there to fear? Just wait until our Yiren shines brilliantly in the entertainment industry. In the end, the supporting female lead is only fit to be locked up in an asylum.”
One comment after another scrolled rapidly past her eyes. Seeing the last one, Pei Baoyuan’s expression darkened.
To hell with the heroine and the supporting female lead—her life, she was the protagonist of her own story.
She no longer wished to remain in such a toxic atmosphere.
Pei Baoyuan interrupted Huo Ciyue beside her: “I’m a bit tired, so I’m heading off first. Please tell your brother for me.”
“...” Huo Ciyue, who had been chatting with Pei Baoyuan about that little Hermes house, was momentarily stunned. Suddenly, she felt something was off about Pei Baoyuan.
Usually, Pei Baoyuan would immediately buy her a bag after such a conversation, but today she was completely indifferent, even leaving early from her brother’s birthday party.
After thinking for a while, Huo Ciyue blamed the problem on Song Yiren and gave her a hard glare.
A woman from a small town just wasn’t fit for the stage, not comparable to the Pei family. Her brother was truly blind—playing around was fine, but if Song Yiren ended up joining their family, it would be their ruin.
As Pei Baoyuan left, Song Yiren, like a snake, slithered back to cling to Huo Yanzi, making Huo Ciyue seethe with anger.
Pei Baoyuan sat in the club’s main hall waiting for her ride.
Before long, Ke Xianbo came out from inside.
The man wasn’t wearing a hat this time; his bold blue hair made the little young master even more recognizable. Their eyes quietly met. Ke Xianbo strode over and sat down about a step away from Pei Baoyuan.
Pei Baoyuan: ...
She didn’t have much contact with Ke Xianbo in memory, mostly because his tongue was so sharp. Everyone within a meter of him had been stung by his words. Pei Baoyuan even feared one day he might accidentally poison himself with his own sharp tongue.
“If I were you,” Ke Xianbo spoke, his voice as cold and upright as a pine tree in winter, clear and refreshing like a stream, “this birthday party tonight wouldn’t continue.”
Pei Baoyuan looked at him with surprise, not hiding it in her eyes, then heard him say, “I always side with reason, not with family.”
The discerning young prince of the Hong Kong entertainment circle lifted his noble chin, glancing sideways at Pei Baoyuan with a hint of pride.
Pei Baoyuan silently mocked, “Then why did you give him such a nice car?” The words lingered on her lips before changing to, “Those who betray true feelings should be made to swallow ten thousand needles.”
For a moment, she thought she saw a smile flicker in Ke Xianbo’s eyes?
“Why can’t I see that part just now?”
“Me neither, probably a glitch. Can someone fix this amateurish setup?”
Pei Baoyuan was surprised inside but showed no emotion.
Recalling the conversation with Ke Xianbo, she puzzled over why the barrage suddenly couldn’t show the scene when they talked.
Since they didn’t see it, the viewers wouldn’t know she was already aware of Huo Yanzi’s affair. A bold guess flashed through her mind...
Before long, her car arrived. Ke Xianbo suddenly acted like a gentleman, opening the door for her and then closing it.

He tapped on the car window, signaling her to roll it down.
Ke Xianbo’s two words tonight lifted Pei Baoyuan’s mood a little. At last, there was someone sane nearby. She obediently lowered the window.
His arm rested on the window frame, half his body leaning in. The interior was dim, but Pei Baoyuan clearly saw a small mole on the tip of his nose.
Ke Xianbo’s face was like a model’s—both bone structure and skin flawless. Except for that tiny mole on his nose, there were no blemishes. Pei Baoyuan didn’t find the mole unappealing; rather, she thought it was wonderful.
A faint smile curved Ke Xianbo’s lips. “Congratulations on graduating.”
He withdrew from the car, watching it vanish into the distance, the faint smile instantly disappearing.
His cold gaze penetrated deeply into the club’s entrance.
...
When Pei Baoyuan got home, only her mother was there. Her mother greeted her warmly.
“Baoyuan, have you eaten? I asked the housekeeper to prepare something for you.” Her mother held her hand, worried. “You’ve lost weight. Didn’t you eat well abroad?”
Pei Baoyuan pouted, “Mom, you must have missed me too much. I have been eating well. But yes, I am hungry now. Airplane food is awful.”
She had rushed straight from the plane to catch a cheater and hadn’t eaten all day. Huo Yanzi deserved the Dragon Subduing Eighteen Palms.
“Has Dad come back yet?”
Only Pei Baoyuan lived with her parents; her elder brother Pei Zongnian was now the secretary-general of the Imperial City government. After starting work, he lived in a government-assigned apartment and only came home occasionally.
Her mother sighed, “He’s on a business trip.”
“The supporting female lead’s family is all highly educated, while the heroine’s family are vampires—does this setup make sense...?”
“Mom is gentle and generous. It’s hard to imagine she later suffered from depression and committed suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills.”
“Husband and eldest son imprisoned for life, youngest daughter locked in an asylum, sister jumped to her death—who could bear that?”
Pei Baoyuan’s hand trembled. She couldn’t believe what she saw—no one in the family escaped unscathed. Holding back tears, she suddenly threw herself into her mother’s arms. “Then it’s perfect. I’m back to keep you company.”
Her voice trembled, tinged with sobs. Her mother patted her back repeatedly. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying for no reason?”
Pei Baoyuan sniffled, “I just missed you so much. After so long apart, doesn’t Mom miss me?”
“Of course! You’re my little sweetheart, of course I do!”
Pei Baoyuan coaxed her mother until she smiled brightly. That night, the two slept embraced.
Jet lag meant Pei Baoyuan woke up in the afternoon, and no one was beside her.
The barrage went wild again.
Huo Yanzi crashed the Koenigsegg Agera RS with a bunch of friends while street racing. The car lost control and smashed into a roadside flowerbed. He was now in the hospital.
Pei Baoyuan sat up with a start, grabbed her phone, and sure enough, the news had exploded.
Most messages came from Huo Yanzi’s friends. In the past, Pei Baoyuan would have rushed to the hospital, but now...
First, she needed to eat, then put on some makeup. By the time she arrived at the hospital after four o’clock, she bought a fruit basket for Huo Yanzi from the fruit shop near the hospital entrance.

Inside the ward.
Huo Yanzi had a broken left foot, suspended in the air after surgery.
Huo’s mother was heartbroken. “Eat well to recover. I had the housekeeper simmer pig’s feet soup for two full hours. Drink it quickly.”
“What kind of crappy car were you driving? How could you have an accident…”
The Koenigsegg Agera RS, costing eight figures, was called a “crappy car” by his mother.
Huo Yanzi glanced awkwardly at Ke Xianbo sitting nearby. “Mom, it’s not the car’s fault. It’s me…”
“Auntie,” Ke Xianbo politely stood, “The car was a birthday gift I gave my cousin. I’m sorry for causing the accident.”
The eldest young master had lived over twenty years, always receiving apologies from others but never giving one himself. His tone held not a trace of remorse.
Huo’s mother: ...
She was heartbroken for her son but knew better than to provoke Ke Xianbo. She forced a smile. “Xianbo, why did you spend so much money on this?”
Pei Baoyuan listened at the door, almost laughing, but controlled herself before entering.
“Yanzi, are you okay?” Pei Baoyuan asked with concern. “It’s my fault for coming back late and not adjusting to the time difference. I should have come earlier to be with you.”
Huo’s mother seemed to see a savior, her smile stretching nearly to her ears. “Baoyuan, you come and bring gifts…”
Her outstretched hand froze when she saw the fruit basket in Pei Baoyuan’s hand, wrapped in plastic with a red plastic bow that looked cheap, like something bought at a roadside stall.
She maintained a superficial smile and placed the basket in an inconspicuous corner of the ward.
Huo Yanzi looked happy to see Pei Baoyuan. “Yuan Yuan, you finally came. I thought you were upset about last night.”
“Look at your foot. Be more careful next time.” Pei Baoyuan’s smile faded slightly.
Her eyes shifted from Huo Yanzi’s foot to Ke Xianbo sitting on the opposite sofa.
The phone chimed with the sound “victory.” Ke Xianbo, interested, looked up and their eyes met.
Raising his brow slightly at her, Ke Xianbo lazily stood. “I have some things to attend to, so I’m leaving first. Take care of yourself.”
Pei Baoyuan stayed in the ward a while longer, but the chair felt like it had thorns scratching her. She soon found an excuse to leave.
The door separated the inside of the ward from the outside and also separated her from Huo Yanzi.
How had she never noticed before how clingy and disgusting Huo Yanzi’s words were? Pei Baoyuan rubbed her arms, shaking off the goosebumps.
The VIP ward was quiet and sparsely populated. Passing by the stairwell, a door left ajar suddenly creaked.
Thud.
A heavy sound, and a shadow fell over Pei Baoyuan’s head.
